I sighed, leaning over to grab the map. We had to have been miles away from mystic falls. Road trips had never been my thing. Cars made me nervous in general. After the accident, i mean.
As i reached for it, i bumped Stefan's hand. His skin was cold. Like ice. It felt lifeless & dead. I quickly pulled away, shocked.
"Stefan-- your hands?"
My voice came out raspy, unsure and aflutter. I had a reason to be. It was summer. It had to be at least 90 degrees outside. The sun was going down & we had been out driving all day. It was anything but cold. Maybe I was overthinking this, but it was certainly unusual. he softly chuckled, his shoulders shaking with amusement. He totally thought i was crazy. Didn't he? Was he-- Mocking me?
I nodded, rolling my eyes & looked towards the road, diverting my attention from the elephant in the-- car?
He was unparagoned. Or so, he acted like it. it was infuriating. His brother was worse, though. Both of them have such old souls, & they seem like they have everything figured out. I couldn't say the same for myself & maybe that's exactly the reason it bothers me so much. How could someone my age be so.. fearless? So.. Philosophical.
I moved a piece of hair out of my face, trying to make sense of the whole thing. I was stumped. I had to be irrevocably insane. There was no hope for me. I'd lost it. Either that, or Stefan Salvatore really was that mysterious. I just wish he trusted me enough to explain the absences, the constant excuses... It was all so surreal & I would assume I deserve an explanation.
I'm starting to think he's avoiding me. That's the only logical and realistic explanation. Right? Wrong.
I looked back at him, and took a deep breath.
"Stefan, stop the car."
His eyes looked puzzled and he tilted his head. Was he antagonizing me?
"I'm not playing. Stefan, stop the car."
He obliged, and we quickly came to a stop. I hadn't exactly thought this through but I deserved to know more. It was like I was in a car with a complete stranger. I knew nothing about this man-- boy? For all I know he could be a vicious murderer.
I clenched my jaw, drawing in my breath and anticipation, slowly opening the door and stepping out. He did the same, looking over at me.
"Elena, get back in the car."
I shook my head. "I deserve an explanation, stefan."
The thing was, I didn't know exactly what I wanted to hear. I'm not a believer in the supernatural. We are born, we grow old, and we die. There is no loophole. So what was I trying to accomplish from this? What answer did I truly want to hear from him? This wasn't a movie. Not a silly tv show, or a fictional story book... It was reality. And in what reality do we live eternally? Not this one, that, i knew for sure.
I waited for an answer, and at one point the thought crossed my mind. Did I want one?
Ignorance is bliss.
