A Stressful Night

“Let him go!” Pony yelled and ran over to us. He tried to get Sodapop’s shirt out of my grip, but I was stronger than Pony is now when I was ten.

“Knock it off.” I told Pony sternly and smacked his bottom with my other hand. That made Pony jump and take a few steps away from us. Soda struggled harder and managed to slip out of his t-shirt. He ran over to Pony and stood in front of him in a defensie way. I hated how both my little brothers looked scared of me, I didn't want them to be. I threw Sodapop his shirt and walked out of the room. I would talk to them both later, but for now I had to cool off.

I knew my temper would get out of control sometimes, so I needed to make sure I was completely, or at least mostly, calm before I talked to them. I went into the living room and turned on the TV. I heard my boys quietly talking in their room. I might have heard small sobs from Pony but I wasn't sure. I tried turning up the volume to drown them out, though my head hurt too bad for that. I desperately needed a beer, though I couldn't  risk getting drunk and losing my temper again.

After ten minutes, I heard the laughter and heavy footsteps of Steve coming up the drive. He opened the door and swung his body in the house with a weird type of clumsiness. “Sup Darry.” Steve nodded at me. “Soda around?” Steve walked into the kitchen and grabbed a bag of chips from the cabinet.

“Yeah Soda’s in his room.” I nodded. “He ain't going out tho.”

Steve shoved as many chips in his mouth as he could fit. “Why?” The kid asked, chips falling from his lips.

I heard the boy’s bedroom door open, with cautious steps making their way down the hallway. “Steve?” Soda had his stretched out shirt on, and his hair was sticking up weird like. He was probably cuddling with Pony, trying to calm the kid down. Soda looked at me, but was quick to look away. He turned his attention to Steve and tried to smile, but it didn't have its usually Sodapop charm.

“You good?” Steve’s eyebrows shot together at the sight of Soda.

“Yeah, fine.” Soda nodded quickly. “What’s up”

Steve smiled and walked closer to Soda. “I got two smoking hot babes that are just dying to get-”

“Steve!” Soda whispered/yelled. I was pretty sure Soda knew I knew he was having sex, though we never had the talk, so maybe he didn’t. Either way, he knew better than to talk about women the way Steve was about to. I saw Soda glance over at me and then back at Steve.

“Sorry.” Steve shrugged and then smiled at me. “You down?” Steve slapped Soda’s arm and smiled somth’in wicked.

“Sodapop isn’t going anywhere tonight.” I finally interrupted their conversation. Steve looked at me, then at his friend. I think he could tell something was up, but he didn't say anything about it.

“Okay.” Steve nodded and put the chips on the table. “See you later Soda.” Steve stot Soda a pitiful look and then began to walk away. “See ya Darry.” Steve nodded at me, and I nodded back.

I turned my attention to Soda, who was standing uncomfortable in the Kitchen. He refused to look at me, but he wasn't making any movement to go back to his room either. My head was still pounding, and all of the muscles hurt, but I figured now was as good of time as any to talk to Soda. I cleared my throat in order to get Soda’s eyes on me. “Come’mer Sodapop.” I turned the TV off and waited for Sodapop to slowly make his way over to me. He stood arms length away from me and stared at the ground.

I was about to start by apologizing, but Soda couldn’t help himself. “You can't punish me for trying to defend Ponyboy.” Soda’s eyes shot up to me. I could tell he was nervous to talk, but there was fire in his eyes nevertheless. “You shouldn’t have called him dumb. Pony is the smartest guy i've ever met!”
