Drowning

Chapter 2

      Zayn opened his eyes slowly. He was in a hospital room with Niall fast asleep on the bed next to him and his arms wrapped around his chest. Zayn took a deep breath and yawned. He felt much better. 

"Niall? Wake up mate." He nudged him with his elbow. Niall awoke with a start and almost fell out of the bed. Zayn caught his arm and yanked him forward.

"Zayn? Are you okay?" He asked, his eyes wide with panic.

"I'm fine Niall. You're the one who almost fell out of bed." Zayn gazed at him in amusement. Niall stroked his hair gently.

"I was scared Zayn. You shouldn't do that anymore." He whispered so softly, that Zayn thought he'd imagined it. He lay his head down on Niall's shoulder and nuzzled his neck. 

"Don't be scared." He kissed his neck gently. Niall pushed his head away with a laugh.

"Don't do that. It tickles." He giggled and tickled him back. 

"Looks like someone's feeling better." Liam laughed from the doorway. Zayn looked up at him, a shy smile on his face.

"What happened Li?" He asked softly.

"You had a panic attack." Liam came over and sat on the bed. Zayn cuddled up to Niall and closed his eyes. 

"Hey guys, can we come in?" Louis stuck his head in the doorway, a timid look on his face.

Liam grinned at them and nodded. Louis stepped in the room, Harry on his heels.

"Zayn, I'm really sorry. I forgot you couldn't swim. I really, really did. I didn't want you to drown. Honestly, I didn't. Please don't be mad at me." Louis rambled on and on.

Zayn opened his eyes and looked at Louis, amusement sparkling in his eyes.

"Are you done yet?" He interrupted Louis, smiling at him.

Louis stopped, mid rant and stared at Zayn.

"It's allright. I forgive you." Zayn motioned him to come closer. 

Louis jumped on the bed, nearly crushing Niall in the process. Zayn put his arms around Louis and squeezed him. 

Harry smiled widely at Liam and nodded at him. Liam laughed and joined the hug. 

Zayn rested his head on Louis shoulder and sighed in content. Then, in the silence, he heard Niall's muffled voice

"Guys, can you get off of me? I can't breathe." 

Peals of laughter echoed out of the small hospital room, and Zayn knew that everything was all right.
