It had been sixteen years since I had been married to Sam, and I still believed that Happily Ever Afters could be achieved even at the age of almost midlife. Even though it was a dream of mine to raise a child together with Sam during our marriage, we never had the opportunity to do so. It was only six years into our marriage that I became pregnant, and unfortunately, I ended up bearing him a deceased child. I suffered my first heartbreak ten years ago, and things between Sam and I have not been as optimistic and cheerful as they once were. Before I met Sam, he already had a son from his previous marriage, however he got into a fight and passed away a few years ago as well. Thus, it has been just me and Samuel.
My first encounter with Sam was when I was in varsity, he was slightly older than me. I remember how he would always wait for me and offer to get me lunch, take me home or get me a gift. He was so persistent and wanted nothing but me and he finally got me. Our marriage was as right as rain until I realized it was not, then I started having second thoughts that I never had when I met him.
I worked as a behavioural analyst and Sam was a successful businessman, he was into advertising and construction, he was the founder of Apply Knowledge and GreenCore Constructors. Apply Knowledge was a company that dealt with other companies finding students who recently graduated and seem to have the potential within the workplace all over the world and provide training for them. GreenCore Constructors was the biggest construction in the country. He did cut the mustard with everything that he did except being a wonderful husband.
My knock-off time was 5 pm, an ordinary nine-to-five job, while his changed now and then, I was then used to it. Most of the time I would have to eat dinner by myself and leave him food so he would eat when he would get home and sometimes, I would even sleep by myself. I lived with constant downs than ups and somehow had accepted and assimilated them and were part of my marriage. Let's just say he was a visitor in his own house. I was lonely and he did not know or even notice. As for my sexual needs, they were neglected.
Nevertheless, I loved Sam and I was convinced he loved me too. We just never gave each other time and it was killing us silently and slowly. All I wanted was for him to give me attention and show affection and that happened occasionally, and it felt very special and beatified when it would.

I woke up and Sam was already gone, nothing new. I showered and looked at my naked self in the mirror, I had a beautiful physique; pulchritudinous, they would say, and I would see how my male colleagues would look at me, but I wondered why Sam didnt look at me and see that no more. I dressed, grabbed my bag, and drove off to work.
I got in my office and my used to be fresh flowers that had died over the weekend were the first thing I saw. I tossed my bag on the chair and threw them in the trash bin. I switched on my phone and messages started coming through. "Hey, Viv! I hope you are well. I will be coming over to see you today. I'll bring lunch." I read it as I smiled. It was from my only friend, Elisa the Tourist, I would call her. She was a frequent traveller along with her husband, that's how the name Elisa the Tourist came about.
I envied them; their marriage seemed perfect. It was filled with love, and they looked happier each time they would come visit. I would look at them and wonder what happened to the spark I shared with Sam, and I would then remember that Sam is not my peer and maybe hes just aging.
Elisa and I had been friends for over half of my life, we met in high school and our friendship has been the truest thing I had to own. We were mistaken for sisters as our bond was the strongest, we had called it the Hydrogen bond as we were obsessed with chemistry as teens. She was the person who stuck around when there was no sunshine but clouds in my sky
I went through my files and checked my schedule for the day, and it wasn't different from the other ones, I just had two people to analyse who were coincidentally both teachers. I loved my job, but it lacked the adrenalin rush I was seeking.
My phone rang and with the name 'Hubby' popping up, that got me feeling ecstatic. I smiled and answered the call.
"Hey, babe!" I spoke.
"Hey, Viv! How are you, Hun?" he asked. He seemed to be in a rush and was in a noisy place.
"I'm okay Sam..." he cut me off before I could even ask if he was well himself.
"I'm going to be late tonight, my love! Don't wait up for me, I have so many things to do."
What is it? I asked.
"Just a deal I gotta handle, you wont get it..." with that he hung up and I felt my ear buzz with disappointment.
I looked at my watch, it was 8:45 and my first client was going to come in in a few minutes. I went out to make myself coffee and then I sat in my office and drank my coffee.
My patients came and I did what I would normally do. Every patient was different, some walked in while some I had to bring myself and see how they interact with others; some never enjoyed the perks of being called a patient while some did not mind at all; an office was just for consultation, but I was always outdoors examining people's behaviours and making my notes.
I was then anticipated to see Elisa after such a long time. She was dearly missed, and I knew she had tons to tell me, and my lunch hour was not enough.
She walked in with a bottle of wine and paper bags, she never ceased to surprise me. "Hey, friend!" she said with her high-pitched voice.
"Hey, Elisa! Now, look at you... all dressed up just to see me!" I chuckled while she hugged me so tightly.
"Never tell a lady she's too dressed up for an occasion." she smiled. "I brought you wine!"
"I can't drink during work hours, chica bonita." I chuckled while taking it from her.
"You won't be working anymore; you're done with your psychos for today."
I laughed, "They are not psychos, they are just bizarre and think and do differently from..." and with that, she cut me off.
"Oh, how could I ever forget that you are Einstein!? That's not what I came here for, I miss mi amigo." she kissed my cheek.
"I've missed you too, my friend."
She laughed, " How have you been?"
"Fabulous! As you can see." I said while I danced.
"You grew some booty, I see." we both laughed.
We spent that hour catching up and eating till her phone rang and she had to rush elsewhere, and I was stuck bored, again.
