Lauren's POV

I came Early into work with Sophie sleeping soundly in her car seater almost guilty for bringing her to work but I had no choice. I had an early morning conference meeting on zoom which I couldn't do at home because Maria was off to her daughter's place and Jane called in sick plus Ashley wasn't here yet but giving Sophie to one of my employees was my mistake I won't blame her taking care of a child is a handful especially Sophie but coming back to pick her up only to discover her car seater was empty and my employee wasn't with her either, I began to panick with anger and worry. I called the security department to look for her and the entire office too but thanks to Ashley who brought her in with her face buried into Ashley's neck with her other hand wrapping the other side of her shoulder. Strange, Sophie never lets anyone carry her except Me, Brian and my parents
Shitttttt haven't called them in a while.

Picking up my phone to call my dad, it rang twice hearing some shuffling before my dad's voce came up
"It's gonna rain blood today son" my dad said  while I began laughing

C'mon dad don't be ridiculous"
How are you doing? I asked

"Well your old man is doing great. We live in the same states yet I barely hear from you aside from the news headlines"

" I'm so sorry dad. Been busy but I'll try to check up on you and mom more often. How is mom doing?

"She's good. Always complaining how you don't let her see Sophie. He said while laughing
Not again

"I have told her several times that she can come pick Sophie up for the weekend. Is she there with you?"

"She's at the garden, hold on" waited a while before I finally heard my mom's voice
" Your son" my dad said

" Is today Christmas? She asked my dad
"Not you too mom" I could hear my dad laughing and probably walking away

"How are you mom?
" I'm doing great you know. And how's my granddaughter doing?
"She's fine even here with me

" Oh before I forget Brian just called said he's been calling your phone but you weren't picking up and also tried calling your office too but no one picked up. Hope there's no problem"?

" No mom. Everything is fine and thanks also you are free to come pick Sophie up anytime"

" Alright I'll keep that in mind. Thank you.
"You are welcome mom. Take care of yourself"

"Sure I will....bye"
"Bye mom" and she hung up

Immediately I checked my phone and discovered I had seven missed calls from Brian. jezzzzzz man what could be so urgent clicking his number I connected the call to my ear pod since Sophie was already asleep on my chest
It rang twice before he finally answered the call
"I was this close to coming over to your office" he said
" Sorry man had a few issues this morning at the office but it's settled now and I wasn't close to my phone. Mom just told me you called"
"yeah before I forget Chloe is inviting us for a family lunch this Saturday" I said

"hold up... My own sister called to tell you about a family lunch and she couldn't call to tell me but she could call and tell my best friend?" He asked slightly sounding jealous

I began laughing over the phone
" You know I'm her favorite person" I said said still laughing

"Fuck off.... I'm not letting this go"
"Awwwwnn are you hurt baby brian?
" Get out from my phone" he said I was slightly enjoying teasing him

" Sure baby brian see you on Saturday and yeah you should bring Anna too"

"fuck off" he said ending the call

Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if I invited Ashley to come with me right? I thought

Pressing the intercom button I asked Ashley to come into my office. A while later there was a knock on the door and I asked her to come in
Pretty as always

Closing the door she made her way to where I was sitted.
"You called for me?"
"Yes please sit"
I waited until she was finally sitted before I chose to speak

"I was invited for a family lunch and it would be nice if you went with me, would you be free this weekend, Saturday?

I nervously waited for her reply and for a second I could see her hesitation and her next sentence made my heart ache a bit

"Sorry Lauren I won't be able to come with you, got a place I have to be same day. I'm so sorry"

"No problem then. Maybe you could take a rain check for lunch?" I asked hoping she wouldn't decline this one

" Yes definitely Lunch is fine"
" Alri........" I was interrupted by Sophie's cry almost about to carry her and pet her, Ashley made a move to pick her up almost immediately like she was acting on instinct. I gazed into her eyes and I could see she was silently pleading to let her take her which I nodded

She began rocking Sophie back and forth until she became quiet a bit
"I think she's hungry" she told me without even removing her gaze from Sophie who found her face fascinating to play with. Without hesitation I took my phone and took few pictures of them together and I found myself smiling at the pair

I sincerely apologize for the too long break I took but I'm back 🥲🤩
