This was a request from @May845. The characters are from the Pokemon Ranger: Guardian Signs games. Enjoy!
The Pokemon Pinchers that had captured him (Yes, captured him!) would tell him of how cowardly he was, allowing his partner to take the fall for his smart mouth.
For a week, Ben had mentally beat himself up over that one screw-up. And for a week, he had stayed in his metal prison, blindfolded in an unknown place, left with only his guilty conscience. Why should he live while his selfless partner should die in his stead?
But, then the Pinchers let him out of his cage. "C'mon, Ranger," They spat out, mocking him with his title.
"Where are we going?" He asked, slyly placing a homing beacon on the wall of his metal room. If he was going somewhere else, he could hopefully one day get free and track them down with that Area Ranger to avenge his friend.
As usual, the Pinchers ignored him.
"At least answer that question." Ben said, but he refused to beg.
"What, are you gonna make us?" One of them scoffed. "Are you going to defeat us with that Styler of yours?"
Ben glared beneath his blindfold. They had broken his Styler after they captured him, taking all measures to make sure that he wouldn't try to escape.
"It's not like I'm going to go anywhere. And I don't have a partner to rescue me, you've made a point of throwing that fact in my face whenever you get the chance." Ben reminded them.
"We were told that appearances were decieving and not to trust any information with a Ranger." The other Pincher spoke up. "And although your appearance certainly is decieving, you may have the tiniest shred of competence and try to ruin everything for us."
That was a backhanded compliment if Ben ever heard one. Silence fell over the three and all Ben could hear was their footsteps on the metal floors, which actually sounded like... Metal grates?
"Are you relocating me to another base?" Ben asked to break the silence.
He got no response. Great, he was recieving the silent treatment again. Instead of asking them the thousands of questions that popped into his mind, he thought about Summer and he felt a wave of guilt wash over him. It was his fault, all his fault.
He heard the humming of Z.Z. Flyer motors and he was hoisted onto a metal pad. Somebody held a tight grip on his tied wrists and started up the Z.Z. Flyer. He felt the rush of air around him and he heard the familiar shouts of the red-clad leader. Ben believed that the grunts called him 'Red-Eyes'.
Hearing the cries of bird Pokemon, Ben was confident that he was outside of the hideout. "C'mon, we have to make it to the temple for the trade." The grunts told each other.
Trade?
Before long, they had reached their destination and Red Eyes began to talk. "Great job, Ranger. You managed to calm down Entei. It makes my job easier. You, get the Emblem." The red leader commanded. The grunt from the Z.Z. Flyer next to Ben's got off and walked off.
Did he say 'Ranger'? Wow, this must be the Rand guy that the Professor was talking about. Who knew that he had enough talent to capture Entei?
"Now, I've brought my hostage if you've brought Blue Eyes." Red Eyes continued. The grunt that had been keeping Ben at bay suddenly pushed him off the flyer, knowing that once Ben hit the ground that he would be unable to get up without assistance.
He heard a familiar girly scream. "BEN!"
Wait, was that? No... That was impossible. She was dead, he knew that she was dead!
"Summer?" Ben croaked out in disbelief.
"I've released your friend, you release my associate." Red Eyes demanded.
Summer must've done so because Red Eyes cackled and the humming of the Z.Z. Flyers got farther and farther away. They had left.
Footsteps were heard and someone helped him up. His blindfold was suddenly removed and his eyes were blinded by the sudden light. He saw a face staring back at him. Blue eyes, light auburn hair, rosy cheeks, and sloped nose... That was Summer, all right.
But there was something different about her. She seemed more mature with an aura of determination that made Ben flinch. She looked tired and relieved, but Ben was just glad that she was alive. Bruises lined her arms and she had a nasty cut on her face, but Ben was glad that she was alive. She was alive... She was alive! Ben still couldn't believe it!
Wait, did Red Eyes trade Summer for him? So, the Pinchers were right, he was a liability. As if Ben hadn't caused Summer enough trouble by almost getting her killed, he also worried her and she had to trade their only lead on the Pincher's plan to save him! What exactly was he good for? Screwing everything up.
Summer immediately released him from his bindings and tackled him in a hug. "I missed you so much." Summer told him. "Are you okay?"
Ben didn't return the hug. "You shouldn't have gotten me back." He said coldly.
Summer stepped back, hurt and confused. "What? Ben, I-"
"No. Do you see all that I've done? You were almost killed because of me! The Pinchers told me every day that you had died that day, because of ME! I was just a liability that got you killed. And you know what? They were right!" He blurted out.
Summer hugged him again, this time it was gentle. "Don't say that, Ben. I forgive you."
This took Ben by suprise. She wasn't supposed to forgive him. She was supposed to realize that he was right and leave him! "You're not-"
"Don't cut me off, Benjamin." She scolded. "Listen here, you're not the one to blame for th-"
"But it was my remark that-"
"Benjamin Natsuya! What did I just say?" She snapped. "Now shut your damn mouth and listen! Are you going to believe the bad guys over me? These are the same idiots who thought that I was dead! If I say that you're not a liability, then you're not. Why would I risk my life two times to save a liability, huh?"
"Because that's what a liability does." Ben pointed out. "They screw everything up to where you have to drop everything and save them!"
Summer released Ben from her hug. "Really? Then why, when that liability was captured, did I not just leave you there?"
"Because your golden heart overshadows your common sense." Ben retorted.
"No, because you're important to me!" She practically yelled. "You're my best friend! You're my favorite Top Ranger! You're my partner! I'll be damned if you listen to those stupid Pinchers over me! Because if I was as special as you are to me, you'd have no problem believing me over them!"
Ben stopped and sighed, shooting Summer a small smile. "You're right, as always." He grumbled. This time, Ben initiated the hug and Summer clutched onto him. "I missed you."
Summer smiled. "I missed you, too."
"I'm glad you're not dead." Ben said. "Because you're special to me, too."
"I'm glad I'm not, too. Because I would regret not doing this." Summer said, leaning over to peck him on the cheek.
