Logs from the Ashes

I'M SORRY (John Jenkins Log, March 25, 2036)

It's going to happen, no matter what I say. We have been warning the president, Mary and I, especially, that retaliating immediately would be crazy, but he won't be moved. He has decided to fire the bombs.

He has isolated our group into the main facility, so we can't stop him. All of us here look at each other in shame, because we know what is about to be unleashed upon the Earth. I'm not sure there will be an Earth left. If it remains and humankind continues on, I would like to say: 'I'm sorry.' for the weapons of mass destruction that are about to be used. I helped build them.

These weapons shouldn't have existed in the first place after the War, but we were instructed to continue developing them in secret, as the government had information that the enemy is building them as well. If I had any regrets then, they have been buried deep inside and they came to the surface only in the last few days. The science itself fascinated me, as I tried to convince myself that they will not be used in a million years.

My hpes, dreams and ambitions will turn to ash.I might never get to know the child Mary carries. The protection of the facilities is first class and can withstand any weapon, but the ability to withstand atomic blasts is uncertain.

And of the world that we will wake up to, If we survive. Dust and ash and winter will engulf us. How long will we be able to survive in the wastes? Death would be kinder in that case.

We all have choices we can make: Tiffany has got her hands on some new drugs that kill people after a brief high. Will I take them? Will Mary? I'm still indecisive, but Mary and I have decided to take the decision together.
