I was told since I was a child the day you get proposed to will be magical, when I was little I

remember my friends playing pretend weddings, while I did pretend proposals. My mother

always told me a wedding is pointless to the proposal since the man will drop thousands of

dollars to just get you to say yes. My mother has always disappointed me.

Try waking up on your first day of middle school with the expectation to be married. When

you're young you don't know the ways your parents fail you.

"Get up, sweetie." The ringing in my ears don't fade even as my mother's voice gets louder if

anything the ringing gets worse. Step after step as she gets louder my heart rate picks up. I need

to move, get up! A knock and a twist of the handle has me moving. Off the bed into the closet

record speeds have been broken.

"Oh you're up, get ready we have exciting news."

"I'll be down in a jiffy!" Exciting? Dress for excitement, black blouse with sunflower jeans.

Pack for the day, exciting doesn't mean you get to stray from your responsibilities. Announce

your presence. 1,2,3,4,5 voices? She was right, this is very exciting!

" I'm ready, what's up!" Look around the room at all the unfamiliar faces, count five strangers,

pretend to just notice their existence.

"Who are all of you?" Look at mother, her eyes give security. Watch as she rounds the corner.

See her lips move before the words come out of her mouth.

"These are our guests, and a part of the very exciting news." Pretend that mother has not said the

obvious. I'll notice that pretending will become a part of my day to day.

"We are the Jamie family." A woman speaks and notice the way she seems to be looking for my

reaction to the words she spoke. Watch her eyes go over my frame and stop at the face.

Acceptance is the only thing to show on her face.

"The Jamie family? I'm sorry but do I know you?" Apparently my sentence brings joy, the

family brightens up.
"No, but we talked to your mother and have recently come to an agreement." An older woman

speaks this time. The boy next to her straightens, he appears to have paled during that announcement. For some reason my eyes go to the clock 8:55 the bus will come at 9:00. If only I used that as an escape.

"Heavens we should let Truce deliver the news." My mother seems to be bouncing on her feet.

The boy, Truce, seems to jump up at those words. He makes his way over to me, the way he walks it's like he signed a death seal. He approaches me and kneels.

"Will you marry me?" Truce sounds resigned when he asks me. It's nothing like my mother tells me a proposal will be. Today marks the day the downhill fight begins.
