Kofi stared at her reflection on the bathroom's mirror "love came down" was the style for the week, but her cornrows at the front did not quite come down, the hair had defied all the relaxers she had applied, she was tired of it. She used her handkerchief to wipe the sweat on her smooth brown oval face and wipe her sweaty palms, she smoothed her grey, knee-length knife pleated skirt and tucked in her white blouse properly by pulling the ends under the skirt.
What kind of stunt had she pulled back in the classroom? She had thoroughly embarrassed herself, she whispered a thank you to God that there was no one there to witness what had happened, a prayer of relief from trembly lips.
She could imagine what her friends reaction would be; Chioke, yellow the shade of agric bananas, plump and just as sweet would laugh loudly in that jovial way of hers and tell her the similarities between what had happened in the classroom to the most recent high school romance she had watched.
Keziah a shade tanner than chioke would wonder aloud why anyone would run away from a boy she obviously liked and Nila ebony and slender would laugh quietly and list out a zillion reasons why her and Damian were likely going to work.
She looked at her wristwatch, break would be over in 10 mins. She was about to open the door when she heard voices, it was Sara "leaky tap" Effiom and her new boyfriend Zed from commercial art class. Kofi and her friends were the only ones who called Sara "leaky tap" but of course she was known to other students by other infamous nicknames like "chu chu chu" and "LI or Linda Ikeji". If anything scandalous happened in the school she was the right source and boy was her tongue sharper than King Arthur's sword. She had a voice that was a pitch higher than a canary's, she would have made a superb soprano singer that is if she was interested in anything other than gossip.
Sara was screaming at Akpan "you're gay", Akpan said something but she couldn't hear because it was very low, "olodo I don't mean happy, I mean homosexual" Sara again, someone remind this girl that there are still about two meanings to the word "gay" Kofi thought rolling her eyes. "Why then, would you be looking at Damian like that?" Sara screamed at Zed. Kofi shhok her head trust Sara to make up stories faker than her nails.
Kofi opened the bathroom door and stepped out, she saw Sara seated at the the foot of the staircase while Akpan was standing by the wall.
Sara was about to lash out again when she heard footsteps and turned to see Kofi descending the stairs, her eyes took on a mischievous twinkle, and when Kofi drew nearer, she said "hmmm" really loud, so that Kofi was going to hear her, Akpan closed his eyes and groaned inwardly, here we go, he had to go through all this just because he wanted a pretty face and an ass that protruded nicely under a pleated skirt. "That's how they will look innocent yet they will be having quickie in the classroom when no one's around" oh really he's not gay anymore?!? Zed thought raising an arched ripped brow.
Kofi tried to keep her anger down, she turned towards Zed and greeted him "how far Zed" flashing pearly whites. "Cool babe" Zed replied smirking he didn't really know her, except that she was in science class and had a clique of female friends but at that moment he liked her.
Sara seethed angrily like a boiling kettle, she exploded shrieking as loudly as she could, "the day I'll deal with that cricket called coffee, those her hunched shoulders will come down, she doesn't know who she's messing with" Zed was sure that if there were people downstairs they would surely have heard her loud and clear. "It's Kofi not coffee" Zed corrected smiling. "Oh so now you're on her side, you think I didn't see you checking her out, it's over Zed" with that Sara got up and stalked up the stairs, he didn't bother following or calling her back. He knew he'd talk to her later when she had cooled down.

Kofi found her friends under an old shed were they were perching on a damaged desk, they were talking about the upcoming Carol when she met them but the conversation immediately shifted to her when she joined them.
"Soooooo????" Nila asked wriggling her brow, but just the bell rang to signify the end of recess.
"I will tell you guys later after school" Kofi replied almost sighing audibly. But how she was gonna face Damian for the next 4 periods was the most prominent thought on Kofi's mind.
