The start of loss

It was an unusual October morning. You would expect an October morning to be cold and damp due to the rainfall from the other night, but today wasn't like that. It was a temperature that was neither here nor there, the wind was cold, but it was almost refreshing. I was on my way to my local bus stop so the school bus could pick me up. The sun hadn't started to rise yet, but it would have risen by the time I got to school. The school was quite a long way away, and the speed of an average bus didn't help. Well, that's only if it was late.

I should probably introduce myself before we go any further. My full name is Tez Ricashap. It's an odd name, especially for a girl. The name was originally made for a boy, but for whatever reason, it's my name. My appearance consists of short, brown hair and green eyes. I've always preferred wearing the school's trousers and I've never had my tie cover my shirt's top button. Since the weather was getting colder, I decided to wear a navy blue scarf that day. I thought it went well with the black blazer I had to wear.

Not much happened on the way to school. The bus was fairly quiet and everyone was on their phones. It gave me time to think about anything that was stuck on my mind. And before I knew it, I was at school. I hopped off the bus and went straight to my class. It was almost time for the lessons to start. I was about to go through the main entrance doors, but...

"Tez! Wait for me!"

I turned around and was greeted by a petite girl with short black hair and blue eyes. She was wearing a short green tie and stockings that met her knees.

"Ah," I sighed "Mary Loucor," Mary giggled and looked up at me with a bright smile.

"Yep! That's me, head of the student council,"

If you want a brief summary of Mary, she's the little miss perfect of the school. Good grades, good reputation, good behaviour, all those things. She was quite beautiful too. I just told her we had to get to class, but there was something bothering me.

"We've not spoken much before, have we? If I'm correct in saying that, then why do you choose to walk with me?" I asked while we were walking. Mary simply smiled again and said:

"It's nice to chat with people you haven't spoken to very often. It gives you a little insight to their personality and if you should stay away from them or you have the chance to be friends,"

That statement... didn't settle well with me. I didn't tell her that, I simply nodded. The reason why the statement wasn't a great thing to say to me was because I was different because of the way I act. I could see right through someone, I could tell what was a lie or a truth. I could easily put on a façade if I needed to. I act like Sherlock Holmes, if you want a quick summary.

Those in my school who knew this and saw the similarities between me and Holmes decided it would be a great idea to insult me for just that. They didn't say that I was 'too different' for their liking, but instead they would say things along the lines of:

"She's the opposite of Sherlock" "She'll kill you if you're not careful" "My parents say sociopaths can be killers" "Don't be friends with her, she'll stab you in the back, metaphorically and literally"

I had no need to worry about their statements at the time. They would get what was coming to them soon enough. However, these rumours did bother me quite a bit, so I wasn't entirely pleased when I heard Mary's statement.

"So class 1-A is right... HERE! Top set class. Sounds about right for us both I would presume!" Mary shouted. It was at that moment I realised she ran ahead whilst I was lost in thought. I thought that I might have to get used to her behaviour if she didn't think I was dangerous.

The classrooms were ranked based on the IQ level of the students. I was in one of the top sets. I was best at biology, English literature, history and criminology. Yes, my school had that as a subject for students to learn. It was optional, but I took it so I could become just that bit smarter. Biology was my overall favourite. Learning about medicines or the human body was interesting. English literature, it's nice to make deductions about the characters. History, serial killers of any era. Ted Bundy was my favourite. One other thing was that I normally stay behind after school to clean the classrooms when barely anybody is around. I do it voluntarily, it helps me think and, for some reason, it calms me down. Not many people have the opportunity to stay behind. I remember a particular thing that day. It was the celebration of the school teaching students for ninety years so the principal put on some cheerful music to celebrate.
