Mining is a very very important part of Minecraft, its even in the name. Minecraft. But how exactly do you get good at mining, isn't it just digging in a staircase into the ground.
No, mining is so much more then that.
In Minecraft there is such things as coordinates.
Coordinates show you location, like longitude and latitude. The Y coordinate is how far up you are from bedrock, meaning Y 24 is 24 blocks up from bedrock. Bedrock is the layer of unbreakable stone at the bottom of the world to prevent you from mining into the void.
That is the first thing you must remember for mining, the second is that some ores and materials can only be broken with certain tools. They can still be broken but you will not be able to pick them up. For example if you accidentally break a diamond ore with a stone pick you will not get a diamond. See the chart below.
Wood pick: Stone, Coal.
Stone pick: Stone, Coal, iron.
Iron pick: Stone, Coal, iron, gold, diamond, emerald, Redstone.
Now, all ores have a Y that they most commonly appear at except iron. I will talk about that later.
Gold is most common between Y 0 so bedrock and Y32
Diamond is most common at Y 12 and Y 11.
Redstone is most common at Y0 to Y 16
Emerald is most common from Y 0 to Y 32. (But keep in mind it is SUPER rare and a much more viable way to get emeralds is trading with villagers.)
Coal generates anywhere from Y 0 to Y 127 but it is much easier found by simply looking around in the mountains as it often sits on the side of them and can be easily located and mined.
Iron generates anywhere from Y 0 to Y 63 but you can find it easily by simply running through caves as it spawns very frequently on the walls ceiling and floor of caves. To go iron mining simply grab some torches and find a cave.
To go mining for any ore except iron and coal, get the right pickaxe and mine in a staircase down to the level it generates at. Then simply mine in a straight line until you find it.
The very last thing you must know about mining is smelting, when mined, some resource's drop as ore they will need to be smelted to use in crafting recipes. You smelt by putting coal or charcoal (Which is obtained by burning wood in a furnace.) in with a ore. Below is a reference chart for which resources need to be smelted.
Needs to be smelted: Iron and gold.
Drops without smelting: Redstone, diamond, emerald.
There is two last ores I must talk about.
The first is the soon to be added copper ore. Which is coming with the caves and cliffs update.
It generates from Y0 to Y 42 and I will go more in depth on its uses when the update is released.
And the last is netherite. Added recently in the nether update netherite is the most powerful ore there is.
To obtain a netherite ingot one must first find four ancient debris. Which can only be mined with a diamond pick. This generates from Y11 to Y15 in the NETHER.
Four ancient debris can be crafted together with four gold to make a netherite ingot, as shown below.

Once you have that, it isn't used exactly like other ingots to create a netherite item, you must combine a diamond item with a netherite ingot, in a smithing table. Which can be found in a village. A couple examples below.

Netherite armor also reduces knockback which is helpful when fighting in an area where you may be hit of an edge. When someone makes a netherite hoe they receive the achievement "extreme dedication." And when they make a full set of netherite armor, they get the achievement "cover me with debris."
