Once upon a time, I was a foolish mermaid. Like many young merpeople, I had a stage of rebellion against my father and the rest of my family. However, unlike many young merpeople, this cost me many things that cannot be replaced or fixed. Arrogance and stubbornness came over me, blinding me from thinking straight. I made rash decisions and now, I am stuck on land with someone of whom I do not love. Away from my friends and family, I cry in a strange land that holds no special place in my heart. My beautiful tail is replaced by inadequate legs that cannot help me swim as fast or as easy as I used to be able to. The tide works against me, pushes me back with each wave instead of how I used to glide with it. I am always short of breath from having to swim by flailing my legs and from not being able to breathe above and below water. All of this because of my one mistake.
