Long ago, a drop of sun fell from the sky and grew from the ground up into a beautiful golden flower. This flower however was not any ordinary one. It held immense power. Power that rulers and civilians alike would do anything to have. It could restore health, keep the ugly beautiful, and make the old young.
One of my ancestors found this flower and became incredibly rich and powerful. Using his wealth, he formed a kingdom. A kingdom that he named Corona, in honor of the sun drop. Throughout the years the kingdom thrived, not only because of the famous sun drop. It had a certain culture, which drew in visitors from all over the world. Heir after heir sat on the Coronian throne, up until me that is.
My real mother was quite lucky. Her body was frail, and it was thought she'd never be able to conceive. My father, being an incredibly devoted husband, didn't even think about replacing his queen and she felt the same. They both accepted their infertile fate. However, everybody was wrong. She fell pregnant and everything was fine until the very end. She became incredibly sick with an illness that couldn't be cured and my king's father knew only one thing could save her. That being the sacred sun drop. He had his most trustworthy guards uproot the flower and deliver it to his sick wife. She recovered and I was born hours later with long golden silky locks.
However, what the king didn't know at the time was that a wicked old lady had been using the flower for immortality. When she saw the guards take her source of youth she stalked them to our happy castle. Later, she snuck into my nursery room through the balcony doors and saw my sun-kissed hair. She held my yellow locks in her aging hands thinking of ways she could take the power back as her own. The conniving lady cut a strand of my young hair away, proving her suspicions correct, and kidnapped me from my safe crib. This caused my parents great heartache and despair but brought even more attention to our small kingdom.
As I grew older, I noticed that the night sky would change only on my birthday. I would stare out the window of my isolated tower and watch the lights dance across it. Thinking it was made specifically for me. Every year I would beg "Mother" to take me to see them. Every year I was denied and given the same excuses as to why we couldn't go. Not only was I told no repeatedly by her, but I also spent my days alone in my quiet tower. Mother was never home. The only time she spent with me was when she brushed my long hair and made me sing that magical song,
"Flower gleam and glow, let your power shine, save what has been lost, and bring back what once was mine".
Being lonesome sparked my creativity and imagination. I spent the majority of my time with my nose stuck in my books or painting murals all over the round walls of my tower. If I wasn't doing that then I was cooking, cleaning, and most importantly brushing my long, uncut, golden hair. I had also formed a friendship with a chameleon who I named Pascal.
Before I was to turn 18, I begged Mother one last time to let me see the lights. Of course, I was met with the same reply. She told me about the dangers of the outside world before sitting me down and brushing my glowing hair. I gave up. There was one thing I could at least get out of her though. Later that night she left to fetch a set of vibrant paints from a foreign land.
Hours later, a man entered my tower with the most bedazzled crown I had ever seen. One that was expensive and stolen. After hours of bickering, we both agreed. I would release him and give him his crown back only if and when he took me to see the magical lights. For the first time, I left my tower and was met with an outside world that wasn't anything like how Mother made it out to be.
We traveled to the kingdom of Corona and witnessed the lights, which turned out to be lanterns. Over our long journey, I fell hard for this man, most likely because he was the first male I had ever met who wasn't fictional. I, being the naive girl I was, thought he felt the same way. Indeed, we both enjoyed a passionate kiss. Oh, how wrong and stubborn I was. Mother found me and locked me back up in my tower. He never came to save me or even tried to contact me. I guess his greed ended up getting the better of him.
