I looked down at my long, blonde hair that went down to my waist but was tied back "I refuse. I'm sorry but I love my hair more than anything in this whole world" I continued shaking my head

"It's true." Tewksbury added. Enola payed no attention to us but picked up a rock and began to sharpen the knife "who taught you how to sharpen it like that?" Tewksbury asked

She held it up to look at what she'd skimmed off "my mother" She spoke quietly. "you're mother is very different to mine" We all chuckled "my mother taught me how to wash dishes and.." I paused "well actually, I do believe that's it."

I stood to my feet and began to walk to a line of bushes "WHERE ARE YOU GOING!" Tewksbury called "loo!" I replied

He nodded and turned back to Enola. Once I finished my business I slowly walked back picking up a few twigs and then pausing to look at the constellations I could see

I finally looked down and saw the two laughing together. I wasn't jealous as such because in order to be jealous someone has to have something you want for yourself, but I guess as much as we bonded he never opened up to me that and that's a valid reason. right?

"but I wouldn't mention parents with Alicia, her mother died of consumption and her father abandoned her. I'm all she has" I could hear from the distance

I accidentally stepped on a twig and they turned to face me. I fully walked over to them "I may not have known my mother, but before my father left me at age 8.. he'd tell me stories of her. Lily Gray, the woman who wanted the world to change"

I bent over to the fire and gently began placing logs in "the one who earned her power and didn't steal it" I threw in the last 2 sticks "and an amazing mother" I laughed lightly

"I'm so so sorry" I looked up to Enola "I could imagine growing up without my mother." I sighed "I'm fine. I've had lOrD viCouNt tEWkSbuRy, mARquEsS oF baSiLwEAthEr to take care of me" I mocked him and Enola laughed

"you said you liked it!" He laughed too "but you don't have to introduce yourself as that every time!" I sighed smiling

After our laughter died down Tewksbury asked Enola a question "why have you run? from home, I mean" He turned his head to her "I didn't want to got to miss Harrison's finishing school for Young Ladies" She scoffed

"why have you?" Enola asked begging to skim his hair with the knife "that's a very good question actually" I interjected.

He sighed "I didn't mean to leave you, but you remember the other day when a tree branch nearly fell on me while I was collecting wild mushrooms?" I nodded "It should've crushed me, but I managed to roll out of the way and I realised that.." he stopped

"what?" Enola asked and I nodded now intrigued "you'll laugh at me" He looked down "I won't" the other girl added

"We promise not to laugh, and even so that's not a good enough reason to not tell us" I interjected

He paused and gulped "My life seemed to flash before me. I was just about to take my seat at the house of lords, I had these ideas about how we might progress the estate. But my family were set on me joining the army and going overseas, just like my uncle. And I realised I was scared, scared I would hate every second of the rest of my life." he looked to Enola and then to me

My eyebrows furrowed "I didn't know you felt that way" I looked down breaking eye contact "You couldn't have" He sighed

Enola kept her stare on him "why would we laugh at that?" "Don't I sound pathetic?" "no" Enola replied simply "Absolutely not. I'm here for you, I always have been.. I just want you to let me in"

"Why? Why do you care about me?" His voice raised slightly "Because like you said you're all I have and I hate that I'm so useless in our friendship so I'd like there to be something I can do" Everything went quiet

I huffed "So Enola, Why were they going to send you to the finishing school?" She looked at me then looked back down

"In the morning, we'll have to move fast. The bowler hat man will be hot on your tail-" "where is your destination? We're going to-" "London" I blinked sleepily trying to work out who was talking from the constant cutting off"

He chuckled "well then, shall we, um, stick together" She kept a straight face "If you like?" He hesitated. She smiled slightly but then it faltered as if she'd just remembered something "no"

She wiped down her legs "we'll get to London and go our separate ways" She stood "but-" She stopped me "understood?" Tewksbury cleared his throat "understood" We said together

He shuffled in his seat as Enola walked behind him and pulled his head back "Totally" He let out a pained grunt "Entirely" She began to viciously chop at his hair

"Do you have to be quite so brutal with the hair?" I smiled  "yes." she continued I laughed "you're next you know?"

I shook my head "No, no please." I begged "I've been growing it out since, birth!" She didn't reply "I refuse!"

The next morning

I ran my fingers through my newly shortened hair and sighed "It suits you" Tewksbury turned to me smiling feeling the ends "oh shut up"

A sheep baa'ed loudly "Well you would say that" Enola replied to it as the cart set off and Tewksbury laughed

About an hour or so later we arrived in London town and Enola slid out. I jumped off the hay sack and folded my legs over where she was "Oh, so this is where we part" e" I frowned "Do you think we'll see you again?"

She sighed "It is" she stepped back talking with her hat in her mouth " and that's not up to us to decide" She bit her lip

"Then, Thank you, Enola Holmes, for helping me here." He nodded

She smiled and looked down "you were supposed to have forgotten that name" He smiled "Then you'll have to find another"

And with that we began to ride away. I hesitated to wave but still did so

Both our smiles had been wiped from our faces. We may not have know her long but she was a girl you could never forget
