Tobias POV~~~~~~~~~~

Its been a long week, or month...my group got split apart by a raider gang, leaving only me to escape, I'm starving...I cant survive like this, i wish i was still with my group, we were fine...how did everything fall so quickly?

From the distance, i spot a tiny building with a food statue on top...there has to be food there, there has to!

"I hope people left something there.."
I mumble, stumbling towards the rundown building, its very dark, but I'm used to dark places, that apartment had no light besides the windows, im good with navigating through the dark because of that.

"Hello? If anyone wants to jump out at me, I'd gladly accept some sort of distraction from my stomache...!"
I joke, searching the shelves, while I open the boxes, the feeling of cold metal hitting the back of my head makes me stop.

"Drop your weapons and put your hands in the air."
A voice says.

"I-im unarmed...I come from a group! Well, i was in a group, but...i promise im harmless!"
I say, they look me up and down, like they're examining me.

"Yeah...you don't look like much of a threat."
The voice says...i got dissed by a person pointing a gun at me.

"Yeah yeah, can I get up now?"
I ask.

"Depends, are you gonna stab me with some hidden shank?"
The voice asks.

"No...!"
I say, the voice sighs.

"Alright, get up."
The voice says, I turn around and see a person, glaring at me like I've insulted them.

"Alright, now, did you find any food?"
The person asks.

"Uh-n-no! I was looking for some when..."
I stop, motioning to them.

"Fuck, so much for going of the path for a meal..."
They mumble.

"Path?"
I mumble.

"Ever heard of denver?"
The person asks, looking in a box.

"Denver Colorado?"
I ask.

"Yeah, there's been stories for years about Denver being walled off from the rest of the world, but i have reasons to believe that it isn't a story...and im going there to find out if im right."
The person says.

"That's...amazing!"
I gasp...a whole place still like old times.

"It is, but unfortunately, nobody's ever really confirmed or denied that it's real, meaning they either died there, died on the way there, or decided to live inside the hope wall."
They continue to explain.

"If you don't know if its real or not...why try going?"
I ask them.

"Trust me, i have my doubts, but i kinda have to...i made a promise of sorts."
They state.

"Well...could I go with you?"
I ask.

"Sorry, but no, where im going is for me and me only, i don't take ride-alongs."
The person says.

"Aw man..."
I mumble.

"Aha! Jackpot!"
The person yells, jumping up with a can of food, I stare at them in slight jealousy, my stomach growling loudly in the large building, making them look at me odly.

"How...how long has it been since you've eaten?"
The person asks.

"Ever since I got split up, I've mostly been running, so...a while."
I say, the person sighs, walking up to me with the can, holding it out to me, only then do I notice all the wraps on their arms...well, its hell out here, those can be from anything to cuts and burns.

"Take it."
The person says.

"You sure...?"
I ask.

"I ate yesterday."
The person says, walking over to a table and pulling up a chair, I walk over to them and pull up a chair as well.

"I'm Tobias, but you can call me Toby."
I say, the person cracks a small, almost unnoticeable smile.

"Alright, nice to meet you, Toby."
They say.

"Pleasures all mine, Miss."
I say.

"Ah, no, no Miss."
They say, pulling a face that's between a glare and a sympathetic look.

"Oh, sorry..sir?"
I try again.

"Nope."
They say, now sounding amused.

"So...what should i call you by?"
I ask.

"Well....(y/n) is a start."
They say.

"Alright then...(y/n)."
I say...i like that, it was a cool way to introduce your name.

"So Toby, where are you off to? Now that you're-uh...alone."
(Y/n) says.

"Like I said, I'd like to head with you, I heard my friends talking about denver once or twice, mostly about how cold it gets in the winter."
I say, (y/n) opens their mouth to answer, but a few dead walk in, coming towards us, I guess the noises and talking drew some in, I scream and grip (y/n)'s jacket.

"ITS THE DEAD GUYS, JESUS, WE'RE GONNA DIE!!"
I scream.

"fucking dead...come on!"
(Y/n) yells, grabbing my hand and pulling me with them, we jump out a broken window and bolt down a street, turning around corners until our feet hurt, every time I turn around, dead are there.

"There, A pharmacy! It doesnt look all that broken, we can hide there until los muertos leave!"
(Y/n) says, pushing me in the pharmacy door and closing it, pushing a shelf in front of the door and sighing in relief, the dead bang on the windows, but they dont crack.

"Fuck..."
I say.

"Yeah, Fuck. We'll have to wait out the dead..could take all night."
They say.

"Do they ever sleep..??"
I question.

"No, at least none that I've seen have...from what i know, its like they have no need for sleep, water, or bathing, all they need is meat."
(Y/n) says.

"...so they smell bad. Lovely."
I mutter.

"We'll probably have to stay the night in here, the dead aren't exactly the type to walk off after a few seconds...good thing the glass is holding out."
(Y/n) says, I lie down and sigh.

"Hey Toby...why'd you scream so loudly when the dead came in? Sure they came in quietly, but I've never heard anyone scream that loud in a while."
(Y/n) says.

"I...i haven't really seen them."
I say.

"Never? You've never seen one of them?"
They ask.

"Yeah, my little group had certain people that left this apartment we were held up in, i was never one, so...i never saw them, outside from cracks in the boarded up windows."
I explain.

"Well, I guess that pretty much decides my answer."
(Y/n) says, making me lie back up and look at them in confusion.

"You asked If you could travel with me, didnt you? I can't just leave somebody who cant even kill the dead, let alone has never fucking seen one."
(Y/n) says.

"Really?"
I ask.

"Yeah, I'll teach you how to live outside in this hell-hole, and you'll help me get around, some places arent accessible without someone to help you up, its been a hell of a problem for me the past few days."
(Y/n) says.

"Alright, I'll see you tomorrow."
I say, lying back down.

"Goodnight."
(Y/n) says.

I didn't expect to meet somebody, let alone somebody who would actually help me and not rob or kill me...then again, anything can happen in the apocalypse.
