Note: This story is very much in its first draft stage and can use a lot of work so therefore mistakes are still present and its not meant to be final.

I have taken the approach when writing this book to just continue writing instead of going back to change things until it is completed, therefore changes may happen suddenly, such as character names and writing style.

Enjoy :)

PROLOGUE

The first sign was when the principal, Mr Thompson was giving his assembly speech. He stopped at the end of his sentence, then his eyes widened and a passive expression suddenly took hold of his face. Without a further pause, he vaguely added, "Can the year 10s please stay back in the resource centre at the end of this assembly? We have an important issue to discuss." Then his face returned to its usual state once more, as if in that moment, not a single thing had changed.

"What do you think this is about Bell?" My best friend Melissa asked me in a whisper.

I just shrugged and waited to see what happened next.

We were dismissed and then I walked with a group of my friends up the stairs of the east building to the school, and then into the resource centre. It is a vast library that has two classrooms and a year 12 study connected to it. When we opened the door a few other year 10s were already sitting on the floor. We chose an area of the space for our group to occupy and then we passed the time by engaging in the usual teenage conversation, completely oblivious to whatever fate awaited us.

The remainder of the year 10s arrived not long after us, as we continued to wait for a teacher. When one never came, that should have told us something, but we thought nothing of it at the time. We should have at least had our suspicions as we looked out of the large windows and watched the other students leaving; teachers ushering them quickly out of the gates. The same large gates that were locked only minutes later and no cars were permitted access to enter our school grounds.

Our lack of awareness was only made clear when Isabella grew bored and said she was going to get a drink, which was normal for her. She was a rebel and did not have any patience whatsoever. She made it to the door and pulled the handle expectantly, but the door did not open.

"It's locked," she said in the tone of surprise.

That is when it began. It started as a low rumbling sound that vibrated up into our legs and pounded our ears like loud, unyielding music. First coming up slowly, like seedlings, breaking through the ground, but when the top had surfaced, I saw exactly how massive these sprouts were. Solid rock emerging from beneath the ground...

I tried to justify what I was seeing, but the wall rose higher and higher, faster and faster. I only believed it when the silence was broken; when all the year tens of North Mapleton High gasped in single, fearful unison.

We all ran to the windows trying to get a view of what was going on. A large grey stonewall had arisen from the ground and was surrounding what we could see of the school. Once it had reached its full height, we could not see past it or over it. It seemed to touch the sky, casting a dark shadow over the school... and the fifty-five students within its path.

I looked to my classmates, perhaps for comfort, for a rational explanation... but no one said anything. We were all in shock. I could tell though that no one believed this... we all had to simply be part of a big joke.

Weren't we?
