Getting To Know You (Part 1).

Start from the beginning

Xavier nodded and continued, "Dad was a doctor and mom worked as a business manager in one of these corporate firms. I was 14 when they got into a car accident."

A stoic expression had come onto his face. I knew that he lived alone with Kelsi and Roy but for some reason the thought of his parents never crossed my mind.

"I had to grow up really quickly after that for Kelsi. I became her parent in a way. My mom had actually made me promise to her that I would always take care of her which is why I am so protective of her. I wanted to respect her last wish and do everything in my power to fulfil it. I starting working as a barista for a while. Saved each and every penny I could to keep the house going. My parents had saved some money for us but it wasn't going to last long. I tutored small kids too but the money still wasn't enough. It was then that I got into racing," he said as he looked at me for the last part.

"I am not really in the headspace to tell you everything else but I hope I answered a few of your questions," Xavier said.

I nodded as I put my hand over his that was resting on the table, grateful for him opening up to me, even if it was just a little.

"You know, the officers said that even in their last moments when mom was unconscious, dad tried his best to revive her even though he was terribly hurt himself. The traffic cameras caught it all. The cops asked if we wanted to see the footage but we declined. I have the tape with me at home but none of us have the guts to see it.
That's the kind of love I want, Veronica," he said with an earnest expression on his face. "The kind of love that stays together even in death."

I was awestruck with every word he spoke. Never in a million years had I thought that I would get to see this side of Xavier Anderson, star quarterback and captain of the football team.

"What made you tell me this now?" I asked him.

"Well, I figured you deserved the truth. Its not the whole story but its a start. Besides, you were the only one who didn't know about the racing from our group. Why else did you think that Sky included it in the game?"

"What the hell do you mean by that?! How did they get to know?!"

"Well, Roy and Kells obviously knew everything from the beginning. Sky had stopped by the tracks for looking at Roy race a few days ago. She apparently knew some of the people there and I wouldn't put it past her not to. The crowd over there is her type. Then about Austin and Simon....I had invited them to the tracks for Roy's race when you were fighting with Austin to get his mind off everything. It was a really impulsive decision on my part since I never really tell anyone about it but I don't exactly regret it. It made me better friends with the two of them. As for Jen....I heard she forced it out of Austin and Jamie was with her when she did it. She found all the calls I was getting a little shady so she decided to get information."

Makes sense. Jerko was really easy to scare.

"I have been wondering for a while though," he continued. "Why didn't you go with her to ask him about me?"

"Well Jen did ask me to accompany her but I didn't want to hear it from anyone but you. I figured that it was something related to you so you should tell me yourself."

There was a small silence after that while the two of us finished our ice creams.
At around 6.30pm we left and got back in the car to go back.

"Ryan was the first guy I actually liked," I blurted when we sat in the car.
He turned to look at me in shock as he drove. This time, I wasn't scared that we would crash.

"Veronica, you don't have to."

"No, I do. You told me a little about your past, its only fair I do the same. Besides, this guy I met on my site told me that in order to get someone to open up to you, you need to make them trust you. Telling you a little about my past too will help build that trust."

"Must be a smart guy," Xav said with a smirk.

"Smarter than you for sure," I said childishly as I stuck my tongue out to him.

"Really?"

"Yes, really. Now let me finish."
He kept quiet after that.

"So. About Ryan. He was this guy who not only I but the entire school liked. Guys envied him and girls wanted to be with him. They treated him as this God who can do no wrong but turns out they were mislead. He tried to rape me at a party."

I could see Xavier's fists clench the steering wheel and his jaw harden from what I assumed was anger but he didn't interrupt me and kept his eyes on the road.

"I broke a vase on his head before he could go any further and ran out. People stopped and stared after they saw me- My mascara running down my face and my sleeves torn. Jerko lent me his jacket and while I told him what happened, practically the entire school overheard our conversation. Ryan obviously denied everything and said that I came onto him instead. It was a he said-she said situation and everyone listened to him since like I said before.....he was practically worshipped. People called me a gold digger since he was super rich and said that I chose to create a scene on purpose to get attention since that was the story Ryan and his minions spread.

I was ready to press charges but his parents stopped us. My parents were obviously furious but they told them that if we pressed charges, they would take the case to court and to quote his mom : 'Their lawyers would eat our lawyers for breakfast' and ultimately our reputation would get spoilt. We are a middle class family, Xav, and respect is everything for us so even though my parents didn't agree, I asked them to not press charges. In return Ryan would leave the state and switch schools for the year. Guess he is coming back now."

Xavier looked at me with sadness in his eyes and said, "I know this isn't even the whole story but its still something no one should go through. I'm sorry, Veronica. Guess I understand why Austin freaked out so much the other day when you told everyone that Ryan is coming back. Also, remember this. Whenever he's back.....I wont even let that son of a bitch touch you. That's my promise."

He put his right hand on my leg and gave it a squeeze in assurance.

I nodded with a sigh, knowing that he wont go back on his word.

"Hey Xav?" I asked after a few seconds.

"Mhmm?"

"Why do you call me Veronica? Not even my parents call me by my full name and neither do the teachers. Its either Ver or Ms. Silverstone for them. It's like you are the only person in the whole world who does."

He got a smile on his face as he said, "And that's exactly why. Its something only I call you, no one else, despite the irony that Veronica is in fact your actual name. It kinda makes it special in a weird way, doesn't it?"

I chuckled at his explanation.
Only you, Xavier Anderson, can think like that. Only you. And even though its really hard for me to admit it.....I think I am falling for you.
