I'd never thought I of all people would be a half-blood. Not going to say I didn't want to be one though... Let me just get to it. My name is Jay Durrel and I am just your normal average day twelve year old... Except i'm not normal.... Nor average. And this is pretty much my story.. It started in the sixth period. My last class of the day, AKA English language arts.
I had a decent grade in that class which was a surprise to everyone. I am never paying attention... It's not that I don't want to, it's just there could be better and more fun things to do instead of learning about grammar. At the moment I was rereading one of my favorite books. The Titans Curse by Rick Riordan. I wasn't paying attention but apparently my teacher had called my name. The girl who sat by me nudged my elbow and I looked up. "Hm?" I asked, it wasn't a good response but oh well.
"I said, Jay.. Are you paying attention?" My teacher asked me. I bit my lower lip and nodded my head. "Yes Mrs Jane... I'm paying attention." I lied. Mrs Jane raised an eyebrow. "What are we talking about then..?" She asked me as she crossed her arms. The class began to snicker as I sat still like an idiot. My teacher's dark brown eyes stared into my stormy grey ones as I tried to think of what to say.
Suddenly a voice came over the intercom and saved me from being utterly embarrassed. "We are in a lock down.. I repeat, we are in a lock down." A female voice spoke. The class gave a confused look to our teacher. We weren't supposed to have a lock down drill today... We all stood up and made our way to the back of the class. I sat against the wall as a jacket hid my face from view. I brought my knees to my chest so the people around me could have more room.
Some of the kids started to whisper and were chatting among themselves. I looked up at my teacher who was closing the blinds and locking the door. She walked over to where the class was huddled up at the floor and put a finger on her lips... Signaling us to be quiet. I bit my lower lip once again and decided to ignore what was going on. I opened my book that I had brought with me to the back of the room and began to read it.
Then there was a loud 'thump' followed by many more. The school seemed to shake at each one. I took another look at my teacher. Her face was blank but I could tell she seemed nervous and afraid just like the class. At each 'thump' her dark black curls would bounce. The noise got louder and louder and closer and closer. The whole class seemed terrified. I set my book down.
The door knob began to rattle violently, some of the kids moved under desks... That was a smart move. I nervously tapped my finger against my leg. Then the room fell silent, no one moved, and as soon as my teacher sighed of relief.. BAM. The door got blasted off its hinges and flew across the room. It made contact with the window, the glass shattered into various pieces. I hoped that I was still hidden by the jacket, but I peaked out to see who caused the door to break.... Or should I say.. What.
Where the door had been stood a man at least ten feet tall... Must of had a giant growth spurt when he was younger. The man had tan skin and messy dark black hair that covered where his eyes would be. Scars covered the man's face to make him see much more terrifying. He wore a black, baggy t-shirt and blue jeans that were ripped at the knees.
I do not know how long I was staring at the man but my classmates and teacher had made a successful attempt to escape out of the now broken window. The tall man turned to me, even without seeing his eyes I could tell he was staring into mine. He slowly moved his messy hair out of his face and I choked. Were my eyes deceiving me..? This man had one eye... He was a Cyclops! I've read a lot about things like this in Percy Jackson and I started to feel like I was in the series.
I shakily stood up... Not going to lie... My next move wasn't the smartest. But look in my perspective. I was alone... Unarmed... And terrified. I took my belt off and charged at the monster, swinging it at the creature's leg, hoping the metal part made contact and not the leather. Judging from the Cyclops next reaction.. The metal part missed. He grabbed the other end of the belt and swung me against the wall, I let out a scream of pain as I collapsed on the floor.
"HEY BIG GUY. LOOK OVER HERE!" A male voice yelled. I looked over to see where it had come from. A guy who looked at least sixteen with black hair and grey eyes stood by the broken window. He had a sword in his hand, the sun reflected against it to make it shine. The Cyclops looked at the boy and charged. The boy swung his sword at the creature's leg where I had missed with the belt. It sliced perfectly and the creature let out a blood thirsty scream. He swiped at the boy with his ginormous hands and the boy flew back.
I had been too busy watching the battle that I didn't notice a girl with long blonde curly hair and sea green eyes had snuck up behind the creature. She also had a sword but it was not as shiny as the boy's. She swung at the creature's back leg, it sliced not as easy as the first but it still caused damage. The Cyclops screamed and turned back at the girl. It was two vs one, the boy and girl should be able to win this battle.
After a few more attacks the Cyclops fell and turned to dust. I have been paying so much attention to the battle that I didn't realize how much pain I was in. I squeezed my eyes shut and let out a shaky breath. "Hey.. Are you okay kid? You seem hurt?" A male voice asked.. It was most likely the boy talking to me. "You're really stupid, of course they're hurt. They just got in the middle of a Cyclops attack!" A female voice said.
I didn't want to stay, I managed to pull myself up and I ran out of the room through the window. As I did it felt like hundreds of eyes were staring at me... Probably because there were. All the kids who had been inside the school were now here and staring at me. The sound of sirens filled my ears and I bit my bottom lip once again. I took off, I heard yelling behind me. The boy and girl were most likely following me.
I turned a corner and hopped into a bush to hide. Once the boy turned into the corner he froze and shook his head. The girl shortly came after him, she looked around and her head stopped in my direction. "You're an idiot.. You know that?" She said as she walked towards me. I held my breath as she came closer "I get that I lost the kid but what did I do to be an idiot- Hey! Where are you going?" He said, running after the girl.
I do not know how long I was holding my breath but when I exhaled, I gasped for air after. I clamped my hands over my mouth, praying I was not heard by the two. The girl and boy exchanged a glance. "Hey... We're not going to hurt you... We know what's happening." She said to me in my bush. The boy blinked. "We do?" He asked. The girl rolled her eyes and elbowed the boy, signalling that he needed to shut up.
The two did look quite kind... But I didn't trust them. I stood up and took off. "Wait!" The two yelled. I didn't look behind me but I knew they were running after me. I turned into an alleyway... A huge mistake. It was a dead end... I was trapped. I patted my waist, hoping I still had my belt and just my luck... I didn't. The girl and boy turned into the alley and stayed a good distance from me. Didn't mean I trusted them any more.
"Stay away from me!" I hissed. "I may be unarmed but I'm insanely good at fighting!" Now that was a lie... I've had a bit of training in the field but I was honestly horrible at it. The boy looked like he was trying his best to hide the fact of what I said humored him. He failed and burst out into a laugh. The girl elbowed him. "We go on one mission and you can't even be serious. Oh my gods." She said as she shook her head. I noticed how she said gods. "We bet you are." The girl said kindly to me. She took a step forward, I didn't notice it.
"We're not going to hurt you... We are going to do the exact opposite actually." She explained. The boy gave a confused look. "So we're going to heal him?" He had a point. Opposite of hurting was healing.. Right? But I ignored that. "If you call me him again, I will tear you limb from limb." I growled. The boy froze. "But... Your hair?" The girl shoved him. "It's a pixie cut, and if you looked at their shirt. It has the colors of the non-binary flag.. Are you non-binary, Hun?" She asked.
I nodded. "And don't call me Hun." I hadn't been paying much attention, but when I did, I noticed how the two were much closer, I stepped back and hit against the wall followed by a wince, I was still in pain from being thrown against the wall. "I said stay away from me!" The boy shook his head. "Let's start over shall we? What is your name?" He asked me. I hesitated, but what good could they do with my name? "My name is Jay... Jay Durrel." I said. The two smiled kindly at me. "We are Luke and Bianca Jackson."
