It had been quite some time since Kageyama last set foot into a volleyball court.
He couldn't bring himself to feel all over again. The smell reminded him of the days his hands were dirty with sweat and soot from constant contact with that wretched ball.
He hated the way it just bounced right back into his life when he no longer wanted it at moments like these. High school had just started and already he could see the banners parades around school for several clubs- volleyball being the only one to stand out.
No matter what he said they always came back- first a bald guy, then a tall dude with a beard, and a nice guy with silver hair. They just couldn't leave him alone. Kageyama Tobio was about to find out why.
It happened one Wednesday afternoon by the vending machine. He heard that dreadful squeaks of the floor and he even could make out the bickering coming from inside. A wave of disgust ran through us veins- he was never to set foot in there. He wasn't meant to step foot in there.
His feet moved on their own, completely ignoring their own desires. The rust of the metals doors were apparent as he crossed the line. The net in all of its glory pillared up top the court and intimidated Kageyamas very soul.
"Hey! I knew you would turn up here eventually."
Kageyama looked towards the voice and his eyes trailed downwards at the perky boy in front of him. His eyes were ignited like wild fire. No. Bad example. They glossed over so smoothly like a precious gem found in the midst of a wild adventure to face off against the unknown.
"Uh- I just wanted to look." was all Kageyama found himself replying, however the boy seemed skeptical. "You sure?" He teased as he wiggled his eyebrows in an annoying motion.
"Look, do I know you?" Tobio's brain ransacked any memories he could of had of this orange haired player but had come out as an error. System crashed.
The said boy seemed offended, the flow in his eyes dying out like a wet match. "Wha!? How could you forget!? Middle school. My team played against yours."
Oh no. Kageyama had to get out of here. He felt his surrounding go numb and fuzzy like the sun had just clouded his mind. "Oh." Kageyama knew it was never good to talk at times when he got like this. The other boy didn't mind his lack of response however and kept the conversation going by inviting him inside the gym.
No. Don't go. It'll only make it worse.
"Sure."
Stop, what are you doing? Don't you know what happens when you go in there?
"Okay great!" Kageyamas hands were trembling. His feet were stiff, he couldn't move. He was no longer in control anymore.
"Just follow me then" the boy had insisted- casually draping his arm around Kageyamas shoulders. The fog had stopped. Tobio was free. He blinked several times and before he knew what just happened he was in front of the battered net. The smell. It was-
"Toss for me!" The small boy had exclaimed with much enthusiasm, he was a little too excited for someone Kageyama had just met- wait did he just hold his hand back there to calm him down?
"I- Uh...I don't play anymore." If these words phased the orange haired spiker, he didn't show it. Rather instead, his golden irises seemed to shine bright and a quivering smile failed to hold in all of its joy.
"Toss to me! Toss to me! Toss to me!" His mouth bursted open with the repeating sentence. "Oi, did you hear what I just said?" However Tobio's protests were in vain. The spiked didn't seem to give in.
Kageyama grunted in annoyance before picking up the volleyball. No. Stop. He felt how light the ball felt in his fingers first and threw it up in the air a few times before getting comfortable with all of the creases. Have you forgotten?
Finally, he took a deep breath. One last time. And soon he was back in middle school; the ball flew into the air with gusto and Kageyamas eyes widened at his own abilities. This is the end.
The annoying middle blocker had made an electrified squeal before running swiftly. Kageyama took this time to glance at him.
He jumped.
He hit.
He bounced back down.
The actions were so simple- done over and over again but this was different. Kageyama couldn't remember the last time he felt this thrilled. His jumps were more then exceptional- they were mesmerizing. His grace could only be described as a powerful crow gliding through the sunset. Kageyama didn't just want to toss again, he wanted to toss to him forever.
Ah, it finally clicked. The last and only other time Tobio had felt this way was during his match in middle school.
They didn't stand a chance. He thought he could do it- he had practiced everyday and night for this. It was all or nothing.
The last set had finally came 20-24. Kageyama was too nervous to look at the scoreboard- he hasn't lost yet. He can do this. Just a few more sets. But then he saw it, that jump. Majestic to the point it filled the room and everyone had stopped breathing if just a moment.
The lights from the ceiling illuminated him perfectly- his legs were toned and in perfect form. His arms struck down on the ball like lightning. It was so fast Kageyama was afraid to blink. But it was too late- the spiker was back on his feet and the last point was scored. They lost. Kageyama lost everything that day.
"You're that guy, from middle school arent you?" He found himself questioning. Hoping, almost. What would Kageyama do if he said yes?
"I already told you I am." The boy giggled sweetly, Kageyama really hasn't been paying attention has he? "But your toss- its really something. Like- really really something." Tobio's eyes glistened in shock. He hadn't touched a volleyball since then- since that.
Kageyama stared at the boy, all his previous annoyance now replaced with something warm. He was good, great even, despite his size. Scratch that. He was the best player Kageyama had ever seen. He wanted it almost all to himself but he couldn't figure out which it was- the talent or the way it made him feel.
"Well, I'm Hinata Shoyo. What's your name?"
"Kageyama...Tobio."
"Kageyama. You're going to help me fly."
