Far and removed from the nearest civilization
I strode with purpose among the grasses
Noble steed of forgone greatness
Left behind me for my return

The distant moon above me
Shone with a vengeful glow
Knowing not what would soon happen
But knowing that I would do it alone

A campfire bright in the distance
Sat alone on the great plain
Distant from all else besides it
With nothing but myself and the moon around

The flames shone in their youthful eyes
As they danced around its precipice
Thrilled by the freedom of their world
Beneath this Pagan Sun

The darkness hid my approach
The fire swirled through their eyes
The song spread from their hearts
And reached up towards the northern skies

A moment I stood there waiting
Thinking to cast aside the sword
To abandon the light of day
And dance alongside them as one

But lo I had a duty
And the Pagan Sun above
Could not save their beauty
When the sword came down onto them

Once there was song
Then there was screams
Then there was sobbing
Then there was silence

I looked upon this brand new world
Brought forth from the pouncing of my blade
Their eyes glistened no longer
Their light became one with the world

I extinguished the fire
The darkness took me once more
A group of heathens extinguished
A threat to civility exterminated

But here again I was
So dear under the Pagan Sun
And though their lives had left them
Their voices still whispered in my ears

A trek back to my steed
A galloping into the night
A simple question raised
Why?
