There are actually quite a few things that piss me off about stories. And no, I'm not going to include typos, grammatical errors, lengthy author's notes, homonyms etc.
This is only pertaining to the plot and the way the characters behave.
So without further ado, here’s a list of things I literally CANNOT stand and things that can turn me off even the nicest story.
1.) Stereotyping: This annoys the hell out of me. I know stereotyping is something most teens experience, or do themselves.
I remember being stereotyped as 'emo' at school because I wore black clothes, had a fringe and listened to My Chemical Romance. When in reality, I was the furthest thing from that. I was one of those people who were nice to everyone but that didn't stop people from throwing rocks at my friends and I when we all went to town wearing our Band T-shirts (this is not an exaggeration, we were literally pelted with rocks).
So trust me, I understand when characters stereotype. It's a part of growing up and being a teen, eventually you realize/learn it's wrong.
What I don't understand is why authors like to stereotype so much. I am so sick of reading books about the blond haired girl who is head cheerleader and often described as being the whore of the school. Or the 'dumb jock' who is also the bully of the school. Or the guy who's called a 'bad boy' just because he owns a motorcycle.
It's horrible that even in the twenty-first century people think like this. What you look like has nothing to do with what kind of a person you are!
2.) The whole 'No makeup' thing: Ugh, this really gets on my tits. Authors seem to be obsessed with the main female characters being so anti-makeup...is it really that bad if the girl puts on some mascara or something? I don't get it. I mean personally, I think I look just fine without makeup...but I still like wearing it.
I guess what the authors are trying to teach is that your natural beauty is the best kind of beauty...but sometimes it comes more off as them trying to be-little the other characters that do wear makeup. Like the protogonist will say, "There is no way I'm letting you put that crap on my face." That's totally fine, but immediately afterwards she'll think the the blond school-slut who wears six buckets of makeup. Seriously?
3.) Goo Goo eyes. You're walking with your friend down the street having a lovely conversation...and then you see him. The world is spinning, you can't breathe, he is just so gorgeous. He smiles at you with a lopsided grin. You notice the adorable little freckles above is left eye and that there is one hair out of line on his eyebrows.
...Am I out of the loop on this one? Has anyone really ever seen a guy that was so gorgeous he made you feel like the world was spinning and you had to take notice of every single tiny detail of his appearance? Cause I for one have never had this happen to me...I may take notice of someone walking by and think 'oh that guys attractive' but then I carry on and never think of that person again. I don't stop and take notes of how many freckles are on his face.
I have had crushes on people I've never talked to but if you asked me right now, I wouldn't even be able to recall their eye colour.
4.) Plagiarism. I don't mean plagiarism in the usual sense. I mean it as in 'overused story ideas'. As much as you want, you’re not going to be the next Harry Potter/Twilight/Hunger Games. (Well, maybe Twilight since that poor series has been ripped off about a hundred times already. But you’re going to have nowhere near the success as Stephenie Meyer unless you insert a nasty unhygienic scene with a tampon that people only read for its sheer grossness.)
Okay, going kind of off topic here. Let's take a Wattpad book's eg. There was this book I read a long time ago about this girl who lost her whole family and came to live with her aunt who had around 12 sons, most of whom were interested in the girl. Now even though it sound weird it was an amazing story, but now there are like a hundred of stories like that one.
I know almost every 'new' idea has already been used but that's not what pisses me off. What pisses me off is that they decided to write this story only when they realised it's popular with the readers.
I know it isn't plagiarism but aren't you tired off seeing the vampire section filled with vampires who crave kisses rather than blood?
5.) Forced Love Triangles. We can all see that Jack and Jane are totally crazy about each other and everything is fine and dandy in the world. But then James comes along and Jane starts to have feelings for him. The past 30 chapters of her gushing about Jack are completely disregarded just because some guy with thick eyelashes sits next to her in clasd.
Why? Why do writers do this? WHY? All I want is to read a cute romance novel about two people falling in love.
As soon as I see that Jane might be falling for James the book is closed and removed from my library.
Some people can really pull of love triangles, but it's such an overused topic now that no one likes to read about it.
Let's take the example of this book called Pandemonium. So Pandemonium is the third book in the trilogy. The books are set in a world where people have realized how destructive love is and it has been outlawed. In the first book the girl fell in love with this guy and it was absolutely beautiful but he was killed at the end but she successfully escaped the dystopic society she lived in. In the second book, she falls for this other guy who is wary of her at first but then she shows him that there's nothing wrong with love just the way Alex had shown her. I love both these books. Problem arises in the third book when she finds out that boy A didn't really die. Major spoilers ahead! ! ! ! ! ! ! She majorly fucks boy B over by choosing boy A at the end. Let's keep in mind that boy B was still scared of love and now he'll probably realize that it is as destructive as everyone back home said it was. That wasn't the only thing I hated about that book but it is the only relevant thing.
6.) Repitative plot twists. This is really awful. You come across this incredible plot twist and it takes your breath away. But then a few chapters later (or perhaps in the next book of the series) the same thing happens all over again and we're supposed to be shocked again.
That's not how it works people!
7.) Rushed Endings. Or overly cliched endings. There are loads of problems going around, loads of things the writer has mentioned but then as soon as the protogonist is happy the book ends. What? Then why would you mention that her boyfriend's sister is pregnant if you aren't even going to do anything about it. Oh, I need the male lead to be worried for the next few chapters, let's make his sister pregnant! Ugh
To clear thing up, I'm not against Happily Ever Afters but I just can't stand when they're rushed.
That's actually all I can think of off the top of my head but I really hope I'm not the only one tired of this crap.
Ps: I have probably done some of these in the past so don't take it personally if you have too.
