6 1 1

the waves crashed against
the shoreline and spread out
around her feet.
she took a deep breath of
the air which was filled
with salt and flipped her thoughts
from the endless sea
before her to the boy sitting
in his bedroom
so reserved and thoughtless that
she couldn't even put her finger of
what he was doing at the moment.
she closed her eyes
and breathed out.
he'd been like a brother to her
for as long as she could remember
and yet,
she didn't want to walk that path anymore.
just as she was about to walk back to
the spot where her towel
sprawled out across the tanned sand,
her phone buzzed.
she picked it up to find a text
from the boy on her mind.
it was a goofy picture as it always was.
she smiled to herself and threw her phone
to her towel and started towards
the waves.
if he wasn't in love with his best friend,
she might have given him more time.
if he didn't waste his time
waiting for her and holding her
unrequited love in his heart, maybe
just maybe he could have seen
that she'd loved him all along.
she took a deep breath and let the ocean
swallow her for a moment.
she held her breath and although she
resurfaced seconds later,
it seemed she didn't quite come up
for air for a very, very long time.
