Once Upon A Time

Once upon a time, two races ruled the earth. MONSTERS and HUMANS. The was always a great tension between the two races. MONSTERS had larger quantities of magic and can last longer while using it. But, unlike MONSTERS, HUMANS had greater numbers. Their magic might have been weak, but HUMANS could easily outnumber any MONSTER and eventually win. One year, though, the MONSTER population steadily increased creating concern and worry among the HUMANS. Suddenly, the MONSTER population skyrocketed, but no one knew why. The HUMANS, worried that the MONSTERS would attempt to take over and might win, declared war against the MONSTERS. The war went on for years, no one really winning. There were times that the HUMANS were quickly gaining the upper hand, but then the MONSTERS started to gain as well until neither side had the upper hand or a better chance at winning. Both races were terrified at what would happen if they lost. One day, the MONSTER's ruler at the time fell ill. They called in a doctor, who, unbeknownst to them, was working for the HUMANS. The 'doctor' killed the king, greatly weakening the MONSTER army and people. The HUMANS took this chance and attacked, winning the war. Seven MONSTER mages helped seal the rest of the MONSTER race under Mt. Ebott, trapping them there for eternity. The HUMANS then killed the seven mages, fearing that they might betray them and bring the MONSTERS back to the surface and/or over-throw the HUMANS rule. 

Many years have gone by, and the HUMANS, still annoyed by the MONSTERS mere existence, created a system. This system was, to simply put it, and Execution system. Every year, one person from the army is nominated, give or take, to go down into Mt. Ebott to exterminate the MONSTER race. No one has ever returned, but the HUMANS continue on like they never existed in the first place. Other than the HUMAN that is chosen to go down Mt. Ebott or anyone in the HUMAN guard/army, no one is allowed near the mountain. One day, a child named Chara falls down, hoping to end their miserable life. Instead, Chara was adopted into the MONSTER race as one of their own because of Chara's spite against HUMANS. The next year, a HUMAN named Frisk falls down and became the first successful HUMAN to come back to the surface. But then, she didn't come back. Everyone forgot that she did come back, everyone except their best friend. A few years later, a HUMAN named Shadow falls down Mt. Ebott.
