Chapter 16

Riley's POV

It's been a few days since the Winter Classic and the incident. I haven't talked to Jonathan since, he keeps texting and calling me but I just ignore them. Maybe I'm over reacting, it's not like we were together or anything. Sure we kissed but I mean come on everyone wants to be kissed at midnight, on New Years.

I'm supposed to go see my dad today, but I can't go alone, I just can't. I got a call the other day saying he took a turn for the worst, and that they're not giving him much longer, a few weeks at most, maybe a month if he's lucky. So I don't know who to ask. Patrick and Abby had an event at Maddy's school so they wouldn't be home for a few hours, Mia was out with Pat, and so that only left Jon.

"I can't believe I was doing this." I thought to myself as I dial his number

"Riley?" He asks

"Yeah it's me."

"Look I'm so-..."

I cut him off with

"Look I don't care about what happen the other day, I just need someone to go with me to see my dad."

"I'll be there in 5."

With that I hung up

"Ugh." I groan

"What have I gotten myself into." I mutter to myself

When Jon gets here I'm already waiting outside, not bothering to let him come to the door

"Hey!" He says as I get into the car

"Hi."

I think he realizes I'm not in the mood to talk, because we drive in silence

I just stare out the window nervous to see my dad, it's been a few days since I last saw him, and I'm just trying to prepare myself for the worst

I feel a hand on my knee and look up to see that it's Jons

"It will be okay." He assures me

I just nod with small smile before turning my head back to the window just as we pull into the parking lot

We get out and began walkng to the entrance, just as we're about to enter I feel Jon sqeeze my hand letting me know that's going to be ok

We stay like that until we reach the room

I walk in as Jon follows only to see that he's awake

"Hi daddy!" I say approaching him

"Riley, it's good to see you."

"Well I brought someone who I want you to meet." I say pushing Jon forward a bit

"Dad this Jonathan, Jonathan this my dad."

"It's nice to meet you sir." Jon smiles

"Oh please son call me Chris."

I smile knowing my dad already likes him

"I'll be right back." I whisper to Jon, as I see the one nurse walk by

I'm not even out the door yet, and they're already making conversation

I'm able to catch up with the nurse, and she tells me that he has his good days and then he has his bad days unlike today which is a good day, where he's up and talking. I simply thank her before walking back to his room, but just as I'm about to enter I hear my dad say

"Now I want you to promise me that you will take care of my little girl, you know she's quite special, even though she doesn't know it yet."

"Don't worry I promise I will take good care of her." I hear Jon say

I can't help but grin a little

I wait a minute or two before entering the room

"Ah there's my little girl" My dad says

"Dad." I blush

I see Jon grin at me

"What? I can't help it that your my little girl." my dad smiles

We talk some more before leaving

As we walk out of the hospital I hear Jon say

"Are you ok?"

"Fine." I say with no emotion walking to his car waiting for him to unlock it

"Riley what's wrong?" Jon asks walking towards me

"Nothing. Can you just unlock the door please?" I say impatiently

"I'm not unlocking the door until you tell me what's wrong."

I sigh moving a piece of hair out my face, knowing I wasn't wining this battle

"He's getting worse, ok? They aren't giving him much longer, a few weeks, a month if he's lucky." I say as a few tears fall

Jon doesn't say anything instead he just pulls me into a hug as I cry into his chest

A few minutes later I finally calm down and fine Jon staring at me

"Um we should get going." I say pulling away from his embrace

"Right." he mumbles. unlocking the door

We drive in silence once more before Jon says

"Riley can we talk about the other day?"

"What's there to talk about it?" I ask dumbfounded

"You know the kiss and then you running off after the game."

"Look I've moved on from the kiss, it was just a midnight kiss that's all, and I guess I was just shocked that's all, but I'm happy if your happy." I sigh

As we pull into the drive way

"That's great to hear, cause we're back together." Jon smiles

I nearly choke after hearing that

"Congrats, I'm happy for you!" I force
a smile

"Thanks Riley that's means a lot."

"Yeah, well I would love to stay and chat but I have to go, thanks again for coming with me." I say refusing to meet his eyes, while opening the door and getting out quite fast

"Ok bye!"

Is the last thing I hear before shutting the door and running into the house

I shut the door before sliding down it as the tears come out

I can't believe how stupid I was to fell for that boy

"Riley honey, is that you?" I hear Abby's voice

Shit I thought no one was home

Before I can even get a word out, Abby comes over to see

Her face falls once she sees the tears, she walks over to me and sits down just as I sob into her lap
