→Katniss' POV

Mother once told me about the hanging tree that stood when she was young. I remember seeing it in a blurry image.

My father works in the mines and my mother does laundry for low pay. I have a sister named Primrose. I bring in extra money by selling the animals that I hunt.

"Katniss? Would you mind bringing your fathers lunch to the mine?"

"I guess" I sigh.

The mine is quite far from home. It is in the richer part of the district, which isn't very rich. People are always in a hurry, running around. When I arrive, however it is different. Quite different.

"The mine!"

Children scurry past me with coal and ash on their face. I look up to see the mine. Or what was the mine.

"Papa!" I scream.
❋❋❋
The Peacekeepers are at my side. We are on our way to my house. Tears, stinging my eyes. His lunch still clutched in my hand.

When we arrive, I knock. Prim answers and looks up at me. Then down at the bag. My mother hurries when she catches a glimpse of the Peacekeepers.

"What is it" she says nervously. Her head drops to the brown bag in my hand. "No! It can't be!" She grabs the note in the Peacekeeper's hand.

"Dead"
