Nambra 1968
The crickets in the forest begun to sing their night tale to tell the stories of men who had fallen in the path behind them, evening was coming and as the woman ran further into the bush a man followed her breathing hard, blood a dull crimson stained the singlet he had on, far behind them a gunshot rang filling the air with the smell of gunpowder and more blood and the screams that would echo forever in dreams.
The woman slid over smooth stone slicked with blood and was barely able to muffle her scream as she clutched her swollen stomach, the man picked her up and urged her to move because if they were found they would be killed, she tried to move and cried as pain in her waist and stomach stopped her, one look in her eyes and the man knew that the baby must be born, lifting her he took her steps away to a shed hidden by trees and laid her down, just as she began to push. The pain was unending and with it fear held prominent position, the shadows of gunshot clouded the air and so the baby was born.
It felt like an eternity and finally, the boy came, he was a fine boy, black skin like his father but the baby did not cry, the man slapped the child's buttocks but to no avail, the baby did not cry...
"The baby, may have died but his parents did not, after years they had another child, a girl and she is destined for great things, this girl must always remember she is just like a boy and be as strong as one"
The little girl on the bed was already dozing but the words of that story were familiar and would be with her in dreams.
Sighing Adesun covered her child and stood over her, caressing her stubborn black curls of hair, before walking out and closing the door.
