Ellie walked out of the farmhouse into the woods, after finding every room deserted, all rooms but her art room. She felt the paintings of Dina and J.J weighing her pack down. She knew it would cost her later, but just had to keep the paintings. After finding the house deserted, she was left with a feeling of regret. Her search for vengeance with Abby ended with heartbreak. She knew that she might never see Dina or her little Potato ever again.

She knew that there were two places Dina would go: she would either head on the road and try make it alone, or she might go back to Jackson, where she knew Ellie might never return to, in fear of confrontation with Tommy. Ellie knew Dina would choose the latter, she wouldn't risk the life of her son, when she knew there was a home for him, with her mother, and his father's grandparents. Ellie knew that she had to go back to Jackson.

She hated the idea of having to explain to Tommy about how she didn't kill Abby, even after she killed Joel, her adopted father and Tommy's brother, killed Jesse, the father of little J.J, and  severely crippling him, causing him to become easily irritable, and even causing him to lose his wife.

Ellie reached the mouth of the woods, took a deep breath, shifted her backpack and stepped into the cool shade of the trees.
