It is a very unique surah.
It was revealed to our Rasool s.a.w in the darkest period of his life i.e in the year of sorrow.
It is the year in which our Prophet, may upon him be peace, faced not only internal difficulties in the form of deaths of people most close to him but also external difficulties with the pagans conspiring to either kill him or to expel him from his homeland.
Yusuf is derived from the word Asf in arabic which means sorrow.
Prophet Ibrahim had 2 sons, Ismail and Is'haq.
Our Prophet s.a.w belongs to the lineage of Ismail a.s.
Is'haq a.s had a son named Yaqoob a.s who was also a prophet.
Yaqoob a.s had a pet name of Izrael.
Yaqoob a.s had 12 sons who are also known as the 12 sons if Izrael.
Allah says in the Quran that He had sent the most miracles as well as most prophets to the israelites such that if one died another prophet would be there to take his place.
One of the sons of Yaqoob a.s was Yusuf a.s.
Yusuf a.s greatgrandfather, grandfather and father were prophets of Allah.
Yusuf a.s recognised his religion to be the religion of his father Ibrahim.
Islam is also known as the religion of Ibrahim.
Yusuf a.s was an ancestor of Musa a.s.
Yusuf a.s and the other israelites resided in Egypt after Yusuf a.s was successful in saving the people of Egypt from a drought lasting for 7 years by interpreting a dream of the ruler.
When the no. and power of the israelites in Egypt was becoming a threat to the egyptian power, they conspired against them and eventually made them slaves of Egypt, which was their state during the time of Musa a.s.
