-12 Years Later-
Y/n's POV
It was dark out.

Crap, I waited too long. I needed to leave now, or I might never leave.

I sat on my bed to look at the photo of the boy I once knew. I don't even remember his name, but I knew that I had to find him. Stuffing the picture into my pocket, I swung my backpack over my shoulder and opened the window with an unexpected loud thud. I could hear footsteps quickly coming to my room.

A large man with a bald head and long silver beard burst into the room.

"Where do you think your going?" He shouted at me with an ugly red faced expression.

"Away," I said simply, and jumped out of the window just as he tried to grab me by the backpack. I ran down the street, across the park, and as far as my legs could take me.

Finally, I stopped to breathe when I looked down the street where I had just come from. There was a car coming this way. They were speeding. A LOT. I spotted a gas station and ran behind a bush there, and watched through the bush as my old life drove by.

Ok, I'll back up. My name is Y/n Black, and I was left with my grandma when I was very little after my parents died. Very few people know my real last name, as my grandmother had me go by my mother's maiden name for my safety.

She never lied about how my mum died, and I know that I'm a witch. I don't remember anything from the night, but whenever I think of it, I always think of the boy in the picture. Grandmother never told me who he was. Although I can do magic, I'm very blocked out from the magical world and don't know what goes on there.

I have a scar on the side of my neck in the shape of a lightning bolt. Grandma only told me that there was one other with a scar like mine.

After my grandma died of a heart attack last year, I was moved to an orphanage. The man that watched us was horrible. He picked favorites and punished us others for as little as breathing wrong. He doesn't tolerate magic and makes sure that nobody is to find out about it.

It was no secret that I was unwanted. The moment I stepped in the building I felt like an outcast. Some couples seemed interested in me at first, but I guess something about me changed their minds. I was so different from the other kids they'd met that they didn't have any positive connection with me at all. I didn't get as much attention, but of course I wouldn't complain or I'd have to do extra cleaning. But I couldn't wait anymore, I had to find the boy in my picture. If anything, he was the answer to my questions.

I don't understand why I haven't gotten a letter from Hogwarts yet, I've used magic before. My parents attended Hogwarts when they were young to study magic and it's been my dream to go there.

After the car passed I ran across the street to a large park with a lot of tall trees in it, adrenaline pumping through my veins as I told myself, "You're free."

I woke up the next morning under a tree. I looked around for a little when I remembered where I was, and remembering this put me in a great mood. I unzipped my backpack and pulled out a bag of bread and began to eat a piece.

As I was about to get up and begin my search for another place to live, I glanced at the sky only to find an owl, gliding toward me. It looked like it had a slip of paper in its beak. It gracefully landed on the ground in front of me, dropped the letter in my lap, and flew off.
