The ride home from the movies was silent. It wasn't one of those awkward silences though, it was comfortable. Ashur took one hand off the wheel and then twined his fingers with mine, causing my heart to race like I'd been running the one hundred meter dash.
He pulled to a stop in front of my house and killed the engine. Only then did he let go of my hand to get out of the truck.
"I'll walk you to your door." he said.
I hopped out of the truck and we walked side by side up the gravel path to my front door.
"I had a really good time tonight." I told him with a small smile.
"Me too."
We stood there, neither of us knowing what to say when we came to a stop at my door step and he turned to me and took a step closer. He gently tilted my chin up and he looked a little bit nervous. Ashur, the rogue, player wolf was nervous!
"Can I kiss you now?" he whispered.
I couldn't speak so I just nodded and he started to lean down to press his lips to mine and then...my dad had to ruin the moment. The door swung open and he yanked me inside out of Ashur's hold.
"Thank you for bringing my daughter home safely, Mr. Redwood." he said.
Then he slammed the door in his face.
"Dad!" I exclaimed. "What the heck!?"
He crossed his arms over his chest telling me that he wasn't looking for an arguement. I sighed in frustration but even though we didn't kiss I still felt giddy and excited about the date we had. I did a little happy dance around the foyer which dad found extremely amusing and I was out of breath by the time I stopped.
"I take it it went well."
"It went amazing Dad! He was so sweet, he held my hand and he even made sure that Greg didn't ruin our night." I rushed out.
Usually girls don't tell every detail of their dates to their fathers but it was different for me. Without my mom to talk to my dad was the only option besides Alice.
"Woah, slow down, Greg was there?" he asked.
"Yes. And he was acting really strange. He said he wasn't going to sit by and watch Ashur 'stake a claim' on me." I deepened my voice to imitate him.
My dad nodded and seemed to think about something.
"He's regretting that he rejected you. Katie, he wants you back!"
My smile fell from my face and I looked at my dad as if he were crazy. This wasn't happening. I was rejected by my mate, by chance I found somebody who liked me for me, and now my mate wants to have me back? Not happening.
"But I don't want him back!" I nearly yelled.
"Katie, just think about this for a couple days! He could provide for you way better than that rogue could! Ashur doesn't have much money, he doesn't have a big house, he isn't a part of a pack, he's probably not social and doesn't have any friends. Greg can give you anything you want."
My dad's expression told me there wasn't anything I could say or do to convince him that Greg wasn't right for me or that Ashur was. I so badly wanted to defend Ashur but instead I just walked up to my room feeling defeated and helpless. I couldn't sleep much that night but I decided I would go to school Monday morning. Ashur made me feel good enough to face Greg on my own without me having a nervous breakdown.
------
My dad was surprised to find me dressed Monday morning and ready to go to school. He tried to convince me to stay home at least one more day but I was firm in my decision to go and no amount of bribing could make me do otherwise. I had my hair up like I nearly always do and my regular blue jeans and t-shirt. I threw on my winter jacket and my toque and mittens before heading out the door, the taste of syrup still in my mouth.
