"Done!" Winter told me, revealing her most recent, gorgeous, almost perfect snowflake painting. She winced, waiting.
"Nope."
"No? Ugh! Now I have to start over!" I would tell her all she had to do was add a little line on the top right, but what's the fun in that? I mean, she's so convinced on doing this, but only because she hasn't lived through it before.
"Winter, just stop trying. Why do you want this so much?"
"Because! I want to see my mom!"
"Winter! Your mom isn't coming back! I've told you that a million times! If you go through with this, her kingdom, her life, all she's ever known, will be gone." I was trying hard not to cry. "You're just being incredibly selfish! She won't have time to love you! You're mother will be in hysterics! Depressed, in shock, delirious!"
Winter looked at me like a little girl who'd just been yelled at for eating a cookie before dinner.
"I just, want to see her." She looked down. "You said it might work."
"I said there's a 10.67 percent chance."
"But, it could still work. There's a chance!"
"No, Winter, we shouldn't take it. I took the chance once, and the destruction, I couldn't even bear to stay there. Why do you think I'm living with you?"
"Please! Audrey! I have to try!"
"No." I took her easel and paints. And walked out.

The next morning, I woke up to find the art supplies not sitting next to me on my bedside.
And a scream.
"AAAAAHH!!! Audrey!!!!" I ran into the art room, and saw a giant purple, white, and all kinds of blue swirling like a giant portal.
"You stole the paints?!! And perfected the snowflake?!!"
"I did it! I really did! But I'm not sure whether to be happy or not!"
"This isn't what happened last time!" As soon as I said it, the beautiful, gorgeous, majestic snow queen walked out, gown and all.
"Alaiah?" I asked.
"Mom." Winter said.
"Winter. Audrey!" The queen replied.
