It was a Sunday and there was nothing for Owen and Ashley to do. All their chores were done. TV was broken and the computer was dead. "Mom, can I please go on the computer? I'll charge it!" begged Owen. Mom was making dinner and did not want to be disrupted, "No, go find something else to do. Go outside or ride your -" "Bikes broken but go on..." interrupted Owen. Mom slammed her foot down and yelled at Owen. "I will not tolerate this behavior anymore! Now you have to go outside. Oh, take your sister with you and no phones allowed outside. Unless you want a spank like a 5-year-old!" Owen stomped his feet up the stairs and told Ashley what they were now forced to do because of Owen's behavior.
"Can't you just say sorry and try to get out of it? Thought you were 12 but guess your only 5! Hahaha! Yeah, what? Did you think I didn't hear the whole thing?!" Ashley started to crack up. Owen rolled his eyes and stepped out of her room without making rude comments. He wanted to actually act like a 12-year-old.
The truth is, Owen does a lot to prove to Ashley. If Ashley leaves so would Owen. Their like twins, but only not. As Owen walks down the hallway, he remembers a big field that he and his friend Brandon went to when they were exploring. It was someone's property but they didn't care. Once again Owen was trying to prove that he was an actual 12-year-old. But soon, that memory whisked away and out of thought.
They ran down the stairs and said bye to mom. As they got downstairs they struggled to put their shoes on and walk outside."Be back by 7:00!" shouted mom before she couldn't see them anymore.
Time passed and they were now deep in the woods. "Don't you ever wonder if there was something else to explore? Like, I don't know... maybe an old house? Well, that was kind of specific but like a gun on the ground that was from maybe the 1700s?" Ashley shared her thoughts with Owen. "Well, maybe that was still very specific but ......"
Owen suddenly stopped his conversation with Ashley. There was silence for a period of time. "Owen? Owen?! OWEN? OWEN?!" she said as she broke the silence. The kid had disappeared. He was out of sight. Gone. And probably terrified... Ashley was only trying to search for different signs of Owen that might signal to his appearance. First, she looked for just one sign of brown hair. She looked in every direction. Still, no sign. Next, tan skin. Again, no sign. Whisk "What was that?!" she whimpered as she looked all around. "Ashley?" Owen suddenly appeared out of nowhere. "WHAT?!" Ashley was so surprised she could have fallen to the ground if it was soft grass but she forced herself to stand. "Where were you?!! You have to tell me these things!" Ashley almost cried.
They talked over what had just happened. All this catastrophe is making me want to go back. They began to walk. They were forced to because they couldn't come back until 7:00. Making them walk around in the woods reminded both of a very...scary...story...
Their dad died on a hot summer night... he went out to grab some wood that they were going to use for a fire that night. He went out into the darkness and took an axe with him to chop down a tree. The rest of the family was inside waiting. After 30 minutes, he never returned. Mom was only imagining what could have happened. They went out into the dark with flashlights and searched until it was midnight. Finally, at 2:00 AM they found him lying dead on the ground with the axe sunken deep down into his own heart.
"Are we both thinking of dad?" wondered Ashley. "Yeah, probably. I just want to know what killed him. I really hope he didn't kill himself!" They both were just ready to let all tears fall.
As they walked deeper, deeper, and deeper, they spotted another path that was very wide. Strangely wide that it was not anymore a path. More likely to be a road but they continued to look at the path. But they were careful to not go on the path. For their mother is wise and they follow the rules. "Should we keep going or go on that wide path? Looks kinda creepy though..." said Owen squinting his eyes and leaning forward. "Sure! It will be fun. Plus, I thought you were a 12-year-old," replied Ashley happily acting like Owen never disappeared. "Whatever!" Owen was mad and rolled his eyes. Ashley continued on the wide path.
Ashley was walking and did not stop. Until one moment she froze. Never moved for 1 minute and maybe more. "Ashley? Um... are you okay?" Owen was worried. He got closer to Ashley to see what she was stunned to look at. There on the wide path, was a trail of blood, dead animals and 1 tiny knife that killed a whole trail of animals. "Omg. What happened? Who did that?!" Owen was stunned also. "Okay, I think we should head back now, enough has happened and I'm about to cry because this too much pain entering into my heart!" said Ashley begging and started talking faster until she was out of breath. "Oh, so now you want to leave? You were just asking to keep going on this path because you wanted to be a 12-year-old!" Owen was really mad and wanted to leave only so that he did not have to talk to Ashley. But he knew that they both had to go on and figure out what killed all the animals.
