The story of Ganga begins from the court of God Bramha where all the other Gods ,Ganga and Mahabhisha was also present.Mahabhisha is none other than the previous birth of Shantanu.In his previous birth shantanu was a powerful king of Ikshvaku dynasty .He did many good deeds and after his death he got the chance to attain  heaven.Once he got opportunity to the court of God Bramha and as I told there wvisitere many Gods and Ganga too was present in the meeting.While the meeting was going a wind blew and displaced Ganga's clothes revealing her body.Everyone present there bent their heads bashfully . But Mahabhisha kept gazing her lustfully.Upon seeing this act Bramha lost his temper and cursed
him to be mortal.Ganga who also enjoyed the act got the curse to be born as human and come back only when she breaks Mahabhisha's heart.Accepting the curse he requested Bramha that he, Mahabhisha be born as a son of kuru king Pratipa and his wish was granted by Bramha.He took birth in kuru dynasty as son of Pratipa and knowned as Shantanu.Once when Shantanu was out for hunting he saw a beautiful woman and she was none other than Ganga in her human  appearance standing on the bank of river Ganga(Ganges)  ,he asked her to marry him.She agreed but not before putting forth a condition.And the condition was that he would never question her no matter what.Shantanu agreed . After their marriage soon both had a son but Ganga drowned their child in River.Because of her condition Shantanu never asked her the reason. Like this one by one they had seven children and were drowned by Ganga ,but when Ganga was about drown their eighth child , Shantanu,devasted,  asked her the reason behind the drowning of children that's when Ganga reminded Shantanu about the curse which was given by Lord Bramha.With that she disappeared with the child with. Ganga named her eighth child as Devrath.After she left King Shantanu was left with the dreadful thoughts of living his life without her. As she broke Mahabhisha's means his incarnation Shantanu's heart she got released from the curse of Bramha. That's how the Ganga's life was unimaginable.
