I smiled as I held Davids, my 7-year-old brother, hand, walking him home from school. I take night schools so that I can sleep, work, and take care of my brother during the day. It's hard work but I love seeing him happy... It had been 2 years since mom and dad died. David was too young to understand what happened, but I was 15, I understood what it meant when the police came to our door telling us they were dead. That was the last thing I had expected, and the worst. I remember the day like it was burned into my brain. We were offered to stay at the police station, but as we had no living relatives I didn't want to abandon our home. So I told them we would live with our grandparents, which was a lie, one little lie couldn't hurt.

I heard the voice of my little brother calling my name, "Alex? Alex!"

I felt the familiar tugging of his little hand on my sleeve as I look down toward him.

"What is it, little dude? Got something to say?" I say as I ruffle his hair.

"I made this for you in school!"

He held up a drawing of a crudely draw house, with a tall stick figure and a short stick figure holding hands. I knew that it was supposed to be us, so I laughed and smiled.

"It looks great, David."

I look back and continue walking toward our home. I have a car, but I don't use it, it's good for David to walk around and stretch his legs. I smile, despite having lost mom and dad, we are doing fine... It's not easy to work three jobs though, on top of school and taking care of my brother.

As we get closer to the shops near our house, I turn into an alleyway to take the shortcut to our backyard. I am laughing and joking with David before I hear footsteps behind us. I whip my head back around to see three men approaching us, I push David behind my back and reach into my pocket to grab my knife.

"Well lookie what we got here, two boys alone and vulnerable" One of the men remarked.

I grabbed my knife and pointed it at the three of them. To my surprise the one who spoke pulled a gun out of his pocket, a knife was no match for that... I tried to push David further behind me

"Relax, man. We only want some cash, you don't happen to have any, do you?" The same man speaks up again

I begin to panic, as I know I did leave my wallet at home as I didn't need it to pick up David.

"I don't have any cash man, leave us alone." I narrowed my eyes, my black hair falling in front of one of them as I lowed my head a bit, still using one of my arms to protect David.

"Unlikely, empty your pockets." He demanded, pointing the gun at me.

I reacted in the only way I could think of to save my brother, I dashed forward at one of the men, stabbing them in the heart, and quickly slit the throat of the other. I go for the one with the gun.

I hear David cry out. "ALEX NO!"

I heard the loud bang of a gunshot, as well as a burning sensation in my gut. I didn't register what had just happened until I looked and saw the blood. Another gunshot, and then it all went dark, the sound of my brother crying being the last thing I heard before my world was reduced to darkness.
