-- Aena --

"Aena, wake up."

I felt my shoulder suddenly being shaken, waking me from my slumber despite it being the middle of the night. Hearing that familiar voice, one I hadn't heard in five years, made me feel like I was dreaming. It was too strange to be real. Squinting my eyes, I stared up at the figure hovering over me, my eyes widening once they had focused on them, revealing their identity to me.

"Ethan?" I questioned, my tone shocked yet not able to hide a slight croak from just waking up. Realizing that this wasn't a dream, I shot up, still trying to wrap my head around his sudden appearance. He sat next to me on the bed, hands tightly gripping at my shoulders. There were so many thoughts rushing through my head, things I badly wanted to say to him. The problem was which to say first. I wanted to tell him how much I had missed him but I also had so many questions I wanted to ask of him too. Like why he left me behind with our father who caused us nothing but pain, what happened to him over the five years we had been apart and why was he here now?

"Aena, Aena!" Ethan gave my face a soft slap to get me to focus on him, snapping me from my sleepy daze.

"Aena, I-I'm getting you out of here, I've found a safe place for the both of us to live," he smiled, his grip on my shoulders remaining tight as we would be separated again if he was to let go. Hearing something so hopeful, I didn't know what to say. Only managing to get the bare minimum out.

"Where?" I asked.

Ethan opened his mouth to reply but was silenced by the sound of loud footsteps. They came from downstairs and were approaching the room we were in, making us both freeze in place. I knew exactly who it was.

"Aena?" My father's loud voice boomed from the first floor. Ethan noticed how my body began to shake, my eyes resembling those of a frightened mouse, about to be eaten. Taking only a second to realize the danger we were in, Ethan reacted quickly. Grabbing my wrist, he pulled up so we both stood on the bed. He then opened the large window beside it, a cool breeze rushing into the room. Stepping out into the gutter of the roof, Ethan slipped his hand from my grasp.

"Take your wings out," He instructed. My eyes widened, having completely forgotten about my quirk. I had been trapped there for so long that I hadn't been able to use them at all, making their existence completely slip my mind.

"But it's been years since I last took them out-"

"Complain all you like but if we want to get out of here, we need your wings. I've found a safe place for us but the only way we can get out of here is if you use your wings."

Just hearing about this safe place seemed to trigger my quirk, the bones of my wings sprouting from my back. It was rare for me to get them out, mainly because I never found my wings as angelic. Glancing back at the door of the room, I realized that I could no longer hear anything from my father.

"Aena, let's go!" Ethan rushed, looking panicked. There wasn't much time left.

"I... I still don't know how to fly..."

He sighs, giving me a sympathetic look. But our moment was ruined, the door being kicked open, my father standing in the now open doorway. His eyebrows furrowed in anger, mouth forming a scowl.

"Get away from her!" he yelled, mistaking his own son for a stranger. Grabbing me harshly by the arm, he ripped me away from Ethan as he tried to protect me.

"Aena!" Ethan called, rushing after my father as he carried me towards the door. Feeling so weak and unable to protect myself, I felt the tears beginning to well up in my eyes.
