It was raining, therefore business was really slow in the cafe. The few customers that lingered seemed to just be here for shelter instead of the coffee. I sighed, I had finally memorized all the barista recipes but most of this week has been dead and I was useless. No one ordered anything other than the already pre-made coffee or teas, I was just so ready to prove I was right for this job and didn't just get it because my ex's family ran the place and they wanted to keep me close. At least I hoped so.
Fawn walked out the doors that led to the back room where the inventory was kept. She joined me leaning against the counter to watch the cars fly left and right past the shop's clear glass storefront, "the weather in this town sucks" she groaned. I honestly agreed, the town of Howeton held a coldness to it even in the summer, but everything else grew on me. I knew it was more than the weather though, she told me last night she had a falling out with some guy but she wouldn't tell me who it was.
"I'm thinking about grabbing dinner at Polly's after work, you wanna come?" I smiled in an effort to take her mind off it
She nodded "good idea" Pollys is her favorite
Fawn is one of my really good friends, we met in track and field back in middle school. She has the typical features of someone of complete Asian descent with black hair so long it covers the full length of her back, brown eyes, and olive skin. Despite that and her strict rich culture driven parents disapproval, she was completely Americanized with edgy nose and eyebrow piercings. Her clothes (when not in uniform) always had somewhat of a grunge style. Luckily she started working here a few months before me and was able to help me adjust. No, she didn't help me get the job either, she didn't even know I was applying.
"Aria, he's so cute." She smirks, nodding over to the guy on his laptop.
"I dare you"
She seemed reluctant but like me, she never pasted up a dare and That was really all I had to say and she went over to him. We loved playing that game all the time at work, sometimes we took it a bit too far. I recall once I gave the customer their coffee and while they were holding it I stuck my finger in and then licked it promptly telling them after that they had made a "great choice" and "have a great day" as dared too. I was lucky the customer just walked out without saying a word and when I questioned it fawn said" he looked like a perv, he probably liked it"
I took out my phone to check the time, It was 5:34 pm, and my dad texted me about me coming over tomorrow. Fawn and I both got off in like 15 minutes. I started a new pot of coffee and began to wipe down the counter, I really did love working here. The job was simple enough while I attended college, the atmosphere was warm and fawn made it fun. She walked back up to the counter with the random stranger hooked arm and arm "he coming with us" she grins triumphantly, I laugh at how far she took it.
"I'm Aria" I introduced
"Logan" he replied he was about 6'1, natural orange hair and hazel eyes hiding behind his thick black glasses. Definitely not related to any of the rough guys from here, which was probably what Fawn liked about him. Not that he wasn't attractive, it was just in a 'guy next door' type.
"I'm Fawn" she laughed letting go of his arm and giving him a sudden handshake
Fawn was pretty and charming enough for her lack of introduction to really not matter. Logan just laughed and removed his glasses, you could tell he was a bit nervous. I took off the green apron and hung it up. "I dare you to pay" she sang and gave her the 'you would' smirk, she eyeballed me with a low lip "fine" I exclaimed. Logan spoke up "No it's ok, I got it", and even though my plan to dare her to kiss him after as payback could no longer happen if I didn't pay, I just nodded and fawn just shrugged and gave an 'ok, thanks' after conjointly agreeing, we both clocked out.
