Assumption

Think back to a time where you assumed something. It can be anything that you've assumed; an outcome, the reason to someone's behaviour, an inference of why something was said.

Now we can all say that we all have made assumptions. Let's not lie to ourselves, regardless of how much we say that we don't judge people or always try to know the underlying cause of something, there has been at least once where we assumed something and reacted because of what we assumed without trying to confirm whether the assumption was accurate or not. Yes or no? Most probably yes, and if you're saying no, you've got a strong denial game going on.

See, assumptions are made because we try to put ourselves in another person's shoe and think about why we would've done what they've done. But one thing we fail to realise is that when we put ourselves in another person's shoe, we can never put ourselves fully in their position. What they've been through in life, we haven't been through. The values they were nurtured through would be different to the values we were nurtured growing up. The culture and society they grew up in may have been different to the one we grew up in. This makes us all unique to each other, hence, the way one person thinks, another person won't always think the same way.

Many of us have assumptions when it comes to things, I'm not saying having assumptions are wrong, sometimes assumptions are the most we can rely on as we won't be able to know the underlying cause. But when it comes to things, especially like relationships, we tend to act on our assumptions rather than find out why something was said or done. Let's look at an example of a young couple, Jack and Bailey.

Jack and Bailey were dating for over three years. Until one day Bailey broke up with Jack.

Now, let's think about why a couple would break up after such a long time of dating. Was it because Jack cheated? Was it because Bailey fucked someone else? Or was it because they got bored with each other? It was none of that! They broke up because Bailey assumed that Jack cheated on her. But why? Why did she make that assumption? What would make her think that Jack would cheat on her after such a long period of their relationship?
