My father always told me, "When you're good at something, you'll tell everyone. When you're great at something, they'll tell you." Yes, I know he was quoting Walter Payton but it still lit a fire under me and siblings in everything we decided to do in life.

Compton summers are always memorable, especially this one. My friends and I were going into high school. Mom and dad got promotions at their jobs. My baby sister, even though she acts like she's grown, is going into her first year of middle school. My older brother, Antonne, got out of jail and we were having a welcome home party. It was all good. Like any other Fourth of July, we'd get a pick up football game against some boys from Crenshaw. It was laces or spaces. We picked laces. We got the ball and choose to receive. My boy C-Bone was back deep on kick return. That man is an all around athlete, on some Deion Sanders type level. I thought Crenshaw knew better than to kick to my boy. I guess they never learn. He looked at me and yelled, "Ayo D ima high step it as usual!"

He was gone to the end zone, gold chain and all. A crowd grew on both sides of the field. Even CHS Head Football Coach Jerome Booker showed up with some of his varsity players. Our defense caused a turnover when C-Bone caught an interception. We ran out the huddle. The play was Red Right HB Stretch. You know what time it is. Ya boy is getting the ball. We lined up on Crenshaw's 42 yard line. The quarterback went under center. Time stands still. Next thing I know the center snaps the ball to the QB. We meet for the hand off and I'm gone. The blocking from my O line is so on point as usual. I shook one defender; hit'em with that dead leg.I gave a nice lil baby stiff arm as I was still in bounds and ran up the sideline for a touchdown.
