2050
My alarm rang for the fifth time this morning. I reached over to pick up the bright deceive and turn it off before rolling over into Ethan. He grunted and wrapped an arm around my small figure, "More sleep." He muttered earning a small, tired laugh from me. My eye looked up at his half-asleep frame. I always found it sexy how his dark hair fell into his face. It made him look mysterious yet gentle.
I debated saying yes to more sleep, truth be told there wasn't anything I wanted more than sleep, but there was too much running around we need to get done. "I'm sorry honey, we gotta head over to your aunt's house, get groceries, and you have a dentist appointment at three." I sat up on my elbow to get a better look at him. He didn't look to please at my response.
"I don't wanna go see the tooth hurter." He whined jokingly. I loved his childlike humour. It was such a comfort for me when we first met. "Melissa, please don't make me go."
"Ethan, we have to. It's just a general check-up." I smiled getting up. I felt his eyes follow me to our shared closet.
"They'll still have their gross fingers in my mouth." He complained but moved over to my side of the bed to be closer to me without physically leaving the warm bed.
"They use gloves." I threw a pair of his pants and a green button-up at him, "Keep complaining and you won't be able to join me for a morning shower." I teased bending down to pick out an outfit. Hearing the bedsheets get flung up and off the bed, I'm pretty sure I got his attention.
After a hot, steamy shower, I found myself in the kitchen singing with my wonderful fiance. I was making some breakfast to go with our coffee, he was feeding the dog. I found myself staring at this man who I loved, the man who I spent the last six years of my life with. He caught my staring, "What?" He stood up after giving Maxie, our husky, one last pet.
"Just thinking how lucky I am to have a stereotypical romance." I admitted before realizing that it could be interpreted as a bad thing, "But like in a good way. I enjoy singing with you, and how well we go together. I just really think you're splendid and..." I felt his lips catch mine to shut up my rambling. I melted against him, wrapping my arms around him, spatula still in hand. He lifted me slightly so I wouldn't have to stand on my toes to reach him.
"You're adorable. I love everything about you. Rambles and awkwardness." He teased smiling. I was about to answer but he didn't give me a chance, "The eggs love."
"Fuck!" I quickly peeled away from him to stop the eggs from burning, "They're fine." I relaxed. His arms found their way around my waist.
"Even if you burnt the food, I'd still eat it." Ethan joked.
"No, you wouldn't. You'd tried to Maxie to eat it but he's picky." I moved the now cooked, and not burnt, eggs to a plate. "I would've caught you and you would be all embarrassed you were caught even though I would've told you you didn't have to eat the burnt eggs," I smirked handing him his food.
He chuckled embarrassed, "It's the thought that counts?" He so cute, I can't help but laugh.
It was nearly eleven in the morning when we got to his Aunt's house. The woman had dementia and was just old of age. She often got lonely but we and Ethan's sister would often go see her and have tea. She was so sweet, kind, and had the best blends of teas.
Her house matched her perfectly. It looked straight out of a fairytale. The house was a dull purple with white trimmings. There was a stone path from the with the fence to the front door which was a darker purple. The gardening was kept up by Lisa, Ethan's sister. Diana enjoyed it in her youth but now she wasn't physically able to do it. Lisa and her wife Mary kept it beautiful and blooming. Even in the colder months, it looked amazing. Always the flower's matched the season.
Mary jumped up from kneeling in the dirt as she heard my car pull up. "Melissa! Ethan!" I could see Lisa giggle at her wife's excitement which Ethan and I were as well.
"I think we were missed." I looked over at Ethan.
"We saw them last week." Ethan kissed my cheek as we got out of the car.
Mary unlocked the gate for us as we walked in. Lisa dusted off her jeans before greeting both of us with a hug. "Ethan, Auntie has gotten worse. We should call mom, have her fly home soon."
Ethan nodded, "Yeah, will do." He pulled away from the hug. Ethan wasn't close to his mother. Their relationship was great until he graduated and moved out. He was younger than Lisa. He had moved out of town to go study abroad for a few years, eventually moving back for his last two years. Even though he called every other day, she felt that Ethan wasn't keeping in contact and distancing himself from her. Which, of course, wasn't true. Lisa had tried more than one way to fix their relationship but it seemed neither of them wanted to.
We walked inside the small house and joined Diana at her coffee table. Her hair looked a lot more white and thin. It was shorter too and we had only visited last week. We tried before to get her to go to the doctors but she refused. A nurse stays with her most of the time. Occasionally, one of us will give the nurse a break. Diana greeted Ethan and Lisa. Even though it seemed Lisa and Mary were there for a while before Ethan and myself, Diana seemed to have forgotten. She took a few moments before registering who Mary was. Though she seemed confused about why there was a stranger, me, in her home. There were days where she couldn't remember Mary or me.
Diana looked at me then counted the mugs. "Oh, Lisa darling would you get a cup for our guest." She smiled sweetly before sitting down. Lisa was already bringing one back. Diana urged us to sit as Lisa poured the tea. Ethan and I had brought over a cake from the store. He set it down and started passing out slices. Diana smiled at her nephew, "Oh what do I owe you?"
"Owe me? Uh, what are you on about Auntie?" Ethan raised a brow.
"How much was the cake?" The four of us blinked once at her. "Moneywise?" Diana looked just as confused as the rest of us.
"I don't mean to sound rude, Diana, but what exactly is money?" Mary asked.
"You alright there dearie? Money makes the world go round. You work for it, use it to pay for things, like the cake." Her statements made us more confused.
Ethan got the cake just like we would any other food. There were stores and farmer's markets that held the food. People would take what they needed and leave. Everyone just had common sense and curiosity to leave enough for everyone. If anyone tried to be greedy; for example take all the chocolate in the store, then the police dealt with the situation. Yes, there were jobs but only because they were either enjoyable, like actors, or needed to be done, like doctors. Whatever 'money' was we didn't' have it now. It sounds unnecessary and likes it would do more harm than good.
Lisa just laughed it off and quickly changed the subject to her and Mary finally getting approved for adoption. It was much more lighthearted and calming. Still, my mind raced in confusion over Diana's words. Was it just her spewing nonsense again or was this 'money' actually apart of history. I shook away the thought and listened in on what Mary and Lisa were excitedly talking about.
"Bring us to our next point, Ethan, Melissa, would you be our baby's godparents?" Lisa asked happily. Neither Ethan's family nor mine was religious but we liked planning for the worse.
I covered my mouth as tears spilled out of my eyes. Mary grabbed my hand to comfort me. "Yes, of course," I answered happily. We had suspected that the two would ask us to be the godparents though it was still a happy moment.
After an hour, Ethan and I had to run to grab groceries and fill up the car. We said our goodbyes and left. The thoughts of money crept back into my head. "Do you think Diana was on to something?" I asked turning down the music. It was Ethan's turn to drive.
"About what? The money thing?" He asked. he seemed more focused on the road than me at the moment, though that's how it should be.
"Yes. It was weird and oddly interesting like it should be common knowledge to know what money was or is?"
"Mellie, you're reading to much into this. My aunt is old and a little lost in the head. If anything, shes right about money existing but it doesn't now. So it doesn't matter." He pulled up to our favourite store. They had chips we liked.
"Well, I guess you're right about that. Though it's just odd. Something that seemed crucial and a part of everyone's lives existed and now it doesn't?" I sighed. "It just doesn't make sense."
"Look, we can do research when we get home and you can write an amazing essay on it." Ethan smiled holding my arms, stopping us in the middle of the parking lot. I don't remember leaving the car. I must be obsessed with this topic. I nodded. I enjoyed writing essays. Technically, it would be for extra credit in my history class. I'm studying to become a historian professor.
History was always an interest of mine. I loved hearing past stories of wars or about how religions came around. My favourite period of time would have to be the Middle ages, specifically England. Would I want to be born in that era? Oh heaven's no. But the art, the culture, even the fashion entranced me. I guess it's why I also enjoy Shakespeare.
Ethan smiled and took my hand in his. He was much taller than I was but I think that's one of the reasons we get called a cute couple so often. He leads me into the store, taking me towards the snack aisle first. "I want candy." He pouted. Given that he had a dentist appointment and was dreading that, I grab a box of sour keys but only after making it clear he wasn't getting a single on until after his appointment.

Impeccable World
AvventuraI seriously cannot believe how the hell the world ran back 25 years ago. It was different yet familiar. It's interesting to think about. The way the world ran, what worrying a World War was like, living through one. I just have one question though...
