no one cares to flash him a smile,
to utter a word,
a simple smile would suffice,
but all he gets is a stare as cold as ice.

he tries his hardest everyday,
he gives his best effort,
he wants people to know he loves them,
but no one seems to care.

he wants them to care,
to show that they love him too,
but no one is as soft as he is,
no one wants to care.

they say they do, they say they try,
but they don't.
they make him feel unwanted,
unloved, unnoticed, useless.
they make him feel excluded,
they make him feel unneeded.

did they know that something as simple as
a spot at a lunch table meant so much to him?
it was his spot, his place in the group, but he got cast away,
like he was never there in the first place.
what was the point in being around them,
if all they did was push him away?

"they're my friends" he'd say,
"they're better than my old ones" he'd strain,
but are they better, are they his,
if they keep throwing him away?

it would be nice to know someone cared,
that someone noticed or watched,
and payed attention.
but alas, here we are:

a broken boy who just wants to know someone loves him,
a sad boy who just wants someone to give him a little time,
a confused boy who just wants someone to listen,
an overwhelmed boy who needs someone to talk to,
a defeated boy who needed someone when they weren't there.
