L'appel du vide. That's what the French call it. The call of the void.
It's a feeling more people have than they would like to admit. Perhaps you were standing on the edge of a cliff, or the balcony in your hotel. Staring into the distance and admiring the view. Then, suddenly, that voice pops into your head. You know it all too well.
"I should jump".
You mentally recoil at the words that have wormed their way into your mind. You're not suicidal. You've maybe never even had such thoughts! Yet still they still appeared.
It is also known as the "high place phenomenon". Ultimately, it is your mind's strange and seemingly paradoxical way of appreciating life.
What would happen though, if your thoughts weren't just for you? If the "call" you heard was a call for someone else.
"Jump."
"Climb.
"Drive."
"Swim."
"Fly."
"Fall."
"Die."
These words were never meant for me. They were always yours. Who did you think you were talking to all along?
Do you not recognise me?
It's me!
Your dear friend.
L'appel du vide.
It's okay though. We are on first name terms now...
Just call me Vi.
