Cold. I'm cold. And wet. I can't feel the softness of my bed beneath me. And it feels as if I am being pelted by rain. I slowly open my eyes. Oh. That's because I am. I'm on the path in a street, and there are lots of buildings around me. They look old and elegant. It's quiet save for the rain and the occasional far off car. Then it hits me.
I don't know where I am.
My eyes widden and my breathing fastens. Quickly, I get up and frantically look around me. Then I see it. A bakery. A bakery I recognise. Marinette Dupain-Cheng's bakery.
I'm in Paris.
I stand completely still for a moment. How am I here?!
Suddenly the rain gets harder. I blink a few times, before snapping out of it and walking around to the left. I can't stay out here. And Marinette's is one of the only places I know. I walk up to their front door and knock.
...
Nothing. I knock again.
This time, after a few paces the door opens and I'm met with the face of Sabine, Marinette's mother. Her eyes soften as she looks at me. I'm holding my arms to my chest. I'm probably soaking wet and shivering.
"Can I come in?" I ask.
"Of course." She says, and steps aside.
I come in and sit down on their living room couch.
"Mum? Are you up?"
Marinette herself comes down the stairs. She's wearing her pyjamas and her hair is down.
"Who are you?"
"Oh I'm...Renee."
"And where's your house Renee?" Sabine asks.
"I..."
I can't tell them that.
"I don't know..."
My eyes well up. I've always been theatre kid, so I learnt how to fake cry.
"Oh honey."
Sabine comes over and gives me a hug. It is comforting, since I'm still a little shaken.
"I'll make you some tea."
She gets up and goes to the kitchen.
I'm left with Marinette, who's still surprised.
"I'll get a towl."
For a moment I'm just sitting on their living room couch, trying not to get everything too wet, and wondering what the hell brought me here. Then Marinette comes back with the towl and I stand up. I dry my arms and legs, start on my hair and try my best to dry my clothes.
"Do you know your address?" She asks.
I try to look sad.
"No..."
"What do you know?"
"I..."
What can I tell her?
"My name is Renee...I'm 18 years old...I..."
I take on a puzzled look.
"I love a boy."
Marinette gasps.
"I...I don't know..."
I start to cry again.
"Oh no."
It's Marinette that hugs me this time. Strange. It's only just occured to me how young she really is.
Sabine comes back with the tea and I drink as we discuss what's going to happen to me. They decide that at least right now I'll have to stay the night, so I borrow some of Marinette's clothes and get set up to sleep on the couch.
The next morning I wake up to Marinette rushing to get ready for school. She stops dead when she sees me sitting up.
"Sorry Renee, um..do you want to register for my school?"
"Uh, sure."
"Great!" She says happily.
I help gather all the things I'm gonna need and again borrow some of her clothes; a white over the shoulder top, a black skater skirt, and grey flats. I pin some of my brown frizzy hair behind my head and carry a notebook out the door.
Once we get to College Francoise Dupont we first head to Marinette's locker so she can put her bag away, and then straight to the front office. After we make the necessary arrangements I am put in a different class to Marinette's (obviously, she's 3 years younger), so we go different directions until lunch time.
At that time, I find Marinette and Alya by the stairs.
"Hi." I say shyly.
"Hey! You must be Renee! Marinette told me about you."
Alya stuck out her hand, and I shook it. Another thing I'm not used to. As we finish, I see Adrien and Nino walk over.
"Hey dudettes! And new dudette!"
We chat for a bit, all the while Marinette gleams at Adrien. They invite me to have lunch with them, so I do.
A few weeks later, an akuma attack breaks out. Marinette and Adrien do their routinely excuses, and I run back to Marinette's for safety. When I get there Marinette's parents rush forward.
"Renee, we heard there was an akuma attack, are you okay?" Marinette's dad (Tom) asks.
"I'm fine, thank you."
"Wait, where is Marinette?" asks Sabine.
Knowing she's the hero Ladybug but to wanting to give her away, I say;
"In the panic she ran off, but I'm sure she found somewhere safe to hide and is fine."
Looking at their worried faces I reassure them.
"Hey, she's a smart girl, she'll be okay."
They smile sadly and I go up to Marinette's bathroom to splash water in my face and reorient myself. (I'm writing what I think bear with me.) Just as I'm opening the door she, as Ladybug, comes through her bedroom window.
"Renee."
I try to act surprised.
"Ladybug!"
"Paris needs you."
She holds out a small black box with a red circular and swirly design it.
"Will you take this miraculous and become a miraculous hero?"
I stare at it in shock. I know that me being here is a big thing and I might of hoped, but I never thought...
I blink.
"I can't."
Ladybug's eyes widen a little and she retracts a bit.
"Why not?"
"Because..."
I start to panic. I just told a superhero that I don't want to save the city. I can't tell her it's because I know who she and Chat Noir are.
"Look, if it's because you don't think you're good enough, trust me, I wasn't very good when I started out either. And I chose you for a reason. I need you."
A few moments of silence pass as I make my decision.
"Okay."
