Chapter 1
Giving In
After the shockwave came upon that peaceful Saturday after noon, not many people minded because it didn't have any sudden effects to it, but many thing become weird and unusual after this incident. Especially daddy who was the kindest man in our town. We as a family were well to do and since daddy was part of the FBI, he helped many people gain peace in the justice court. After the wave though he became different and mother says he is only going through a bit of stress because of the "wicked" epidemic that was spreading fast around the world. Thought I didn't really know what it was exactly but I herd that whoever got it would have to be quarantined.
When going to school on Monday I found that many of our student body had gone missing which was a scary thought in itself, but it was even weirder that no one of the staff really cared and when asked about the details they say that there's nothing to be said other than that it was just a coincidence. After school my Best friend told me to fallow her, I had no objections and I followed her in anticipation to what she was to show me. She was a was strangely secretive about what we were doing and had this stressed look on her face as if she could be shot at any minute. Soon we reached our secret tree house in the woods, it was the safest place we knew and it held many shared secrets between me and her. As she opened the door dust blew out in large suffocating gusts.
We haven't used this place in years she said with a shy smile and unsure giggle trying to bring back good memories from childhood. After we were safely inside she closed the door and locked it, then put the dust covered deck in front.
I need to tell you something that I can only tell you... and I don't have much time either... I found out the secret behind the epidemic and what actually happened to the missing kids at school... she passed looking even more nerves then before like a puppy that knew it was going to get hit for going to the bathroom indoors.
I need you to watch me very carefully, like your life depends on it you see... she opened her hand up very slowly afraid that what she was about to show me of top secrecy.
ITS BURNING, IT BURNING, I shrieked with a loud breath. I couldn't say more before she covered my mouth with the hand that just a second before combusted into flames. She waited for me to regain my composer before she let go of my face.
This was what there where after... Your father I mean and the FBI... After that shockwave hit many kids and adults alike where gathered up by them and were taken to who knows where... she was shaken, actually almost trembling with fear.
I went up to her and gave her a bear hug and whispered in the softest voice I had. It's all right... it's all going to be fine. I won't tell anyone... I won't let them take you away and my dad will do all he can to make shore those people are safe where they maybe... he just had no other option I am share of it, you know that he is a kind and helpful man...
After being in my hands for a while she was able to calm down and her tears became red mark around her. I smiled at her, ensuring everything was going to be alright. It was getting dark so after she finished washing her face in a nearby running creek next to the tree house, we went back home and said our good bye.
The next morning I woke up and went down stairs. Mom was in the kitchen making her diet friendly eggs and low fat turkey bacon. When she saw me stumbling in it gave a smile and a good morning kiss, which I replied with a good morning and where's the toast? With that I sat at the table and munched on the toast and jam I took from the counter. As I was finishing my yummy meal aunt Maddie came in through the front door.
He did it again Ana! I just can't get that idiotic son of mine to listen or do a darn thing...
Well maybe if you would not come complaining to me every time he gets you upset you could learn a thing or two about how to deal with him...and what could he had done wrong this time anyway? Mom said in reply to aunt's argument.
He couldn't pass a single collage exam and know he has no chose but to go into work state after he graduates... Oh why can't I have got a child like yours who is on high honor and is bound for glory with her great art skills? Aunt then turned to me and said you got a talent missy don't be like jimmy and waste your talent on doing stupid things. The only test he was ever able to pass successfully was his driver's exam. After an earful of aunt talking up a storm. I said my goodbyes to them and went off to school. I decided to stop at my friend's house and see if I could walk with her to school.
It was only a little bit out of the way from my path to school and I made share to get out of the house a bit earlier this morning. When I got there it seemed strange. All the lights were on but there was no noise coming from the house. When I went closer to the front door I noticed that it was left half open. I rang the doorbell to see if anyone was home to invite me inside. A minute went by slowly ticking with no answer to my nock.
Then it hit me what my friend said just the other day. I ran inside the house silent house looking for any sounds of life. I yelled vigorously as I ran from room to room till I ran out the back door. I ran through the thick vines and over the white picket fences towards the forest hoping that what I just saw wasn't true. When I got to the tree house and tried to open the door. To my surprise it was locked.
(Nock, nock) Open up...It's me... don't worry I'm alone...
A shy low voice then returned my statement with an ok. She opened the door and let me in, then she barricaded the door the door again. She then stepped towards me slowly till she was so close I could see the terror in her eyes.
What happened? I said in reply to her shocked expiration. She looked up at me with her eyes and nose smothered in salty tears and gooey snot.
yo...your fa...ther, he took them... he... I stopped her their knowing I couldn't get her to say more even if I
Forced her to.
I woke up to lights shining through the dust painted windows of the tree house, there was yelling far in the distance. My friend who had cried herself to sleep in my arms that night woke with a startle.
Their coming, oh god no...
She was in a panic. What was coming? Why was she so scared? Why was I feeling such chills down my spine as if we were about to get hacked and slashed with a chainsaw. The voices were coming closer. She grabbed my arms and demanded.
You got to make me a promise... you got to never forget me...
I stood shocked, what did she mean... I was about to ask her why but then she continued...
Doesn't matter just do it and quick... make me this promise now...
Bang!!! Went the door and all the blocked. It wasn't going to last any longer and now I know what she meant, I know what she was so afraid of...
I promise...
Before I could say anymore the door and all what was left of the blockade had vanished and left in rubble to the side. Allowing for the force trying to get in, to get easy entry.
Kaaaaa... she screamed as they grabbed her. Harshly pulling her towards the door. In the haste of the moment, I was able to finish my sentence yelled as loud with all my might.
I promise that I will never forget you. Not ever... so be safe...
Ruby!
I was held back by the intruders. She and I were forcefully torn apart from each other. Here scream was that of pure fear and mine was of fear for her and what awaited her in future.
