My story starts off different than most. This story is deeper than most and isn’t a heartfelt story. It grabs you, and sinks it’s teeth so deep inside of you, you won’t know which way to go. My story is heart breaking and raunchy. Filled with lies and back stabbers on every page. If you’re not ready for this kind of story you better close the book and place it back on the shelf. If you’re choosing to read on then be prepared for the most dangerous ride you’ve ever been on before.
I learned that even the ones you grow to love the most would be the ones that will turn on you and break your heart. I don’t remember where I was born. I actually don’t remember much about my childhood at all. All I remember was the day everything changed. I was in the woods. I remember my mom holding my hand, telling me to run faster. My dad was further back behind. I was fourteen, the sound of dogs running behind me still fresh in my mind. I ran as fast as I could, lungs begging for more air as I pushed myself harder, holding on to my moms’ hand so tight I just knew my knuckles were white. We pushed through the brush and there was a street guarded by lights. I remember the look on my parents face as they looked down at me. My mom knelt down to look eye to eye with me and said, “I want you to run. Don’t look back, just run Derek.”
“But mom!” I said.
My dad knelt down too. “Listen to your mother, okay Derek? We’re keeping you safe.”
“Come with me.” I begged.
“We can’t baby.” She said, wiping the tear from her eye. “This is something you’re going to have to do by yourself.”
“I can’t do this alone…I can’t.” I cried. The barking was starting to get closer. The howls were throwing me off; I just wanted to bury myself in my mothers’ arms.
“Derek, you’re the best son any parents could have. You’re going to do just fine, and you know that. Trust us, you know we wouldn’t lead you into any harm.” My dad said. He took off his dog tags and placed them around my neck. “If you ever get lost, you look for these. It’s me right there with you.”
“Okay honey, we need you to run. We can only lead them away from you for a little while but you run, and don’t look back got it?” My mother said.
I nodded slowly. “Don’t look back…I got it.”
“We love you son.” My dad said, kissing my forehead. He looked down at my mom and then ran back into the trees.
“We really do love you.” My mother said, kissing my cheek. She pushed my body in the direction of the city. I started running and running. The further I ran the more I cried. It wasn’t until I hit a hole in the wall gas station on the side on the side of the road, that I heard a gun shot echo through the trees. I remember looking around and finding a van with two girls sitting in the back seat, looking at me. They looked much older than me, maybe about sixteen and seventeen. The mother was in the passenger seat and the father was pumping gas. I looked around for somewhere to hide, but there was no place to go. I was so tired of running that I was starting to give up.
“You lost?” The father said. I just looked at him with worried eyes. My father always told me not to trust anyone…but I couldn’t help but want to trust this man. He walked towards me and bent down to eye-level. “We’re not here to hurt you, we’re just passing through. Are you alone?”
“Yes sir.” I whispered. I could hear the dogs starting to get closer…I just knew I was next.
“Do you need a lift son?” the father said again. His t-shirt said WORLD’S GREATEST DAD, and he had on a Yankees cap. I remember looking at him wishing it was my father asking me the questions. Instead of answering I just nodded. He led me into the mini-van. I found a seat in between the two sisters, who wrapped me in blankets and handed me a bottle of water from the trunk.
I saw two men dressed in black emerge from the trees, with dogs on leashes in their hands. “Have you seen a kid run around through here?” One of the men asked, he had blonde hair.
The man helping me just shook his head. “I haven’t seen a thing. I was just finishing pumping my gas.”
The other one spoke up. “Are you sure?”
The man just nodded his head and said, “I have to get back on the road if you wouldn’t mind.” And walked past them. He started the mini-van back up and drove off, leaving the two men staring at the back of the van suspiciously. “My name is Jim.” The man said. He pointed to his wife in the passenger seat and said, “And that’s Nora. Back there, with you, are my daughters Tegan and Rio.”
“My name is Derek…Derek Wilds.”
“Who were those men?” Nora spoke up.
“They want to take me away like they did with my parents.” I whispered.
Nora turned in her seat and grabbed my hand. “Nothings going to happen to you. You’re safe now.”
But she should’ve known…I’m never going to be safe.
