The angry farmer takes him to the police station to which the policeman lets them both off free of any charges. When Seita gets out we his Setsuko, just waiting there for her brother. The two start hugging and crying and I started crying too.

Towards the end of the war, Seita finally gets ahold of some decent food for his sister who is now suffering from malnutrition. Unfortunately for him, he is too late. She dies after having a piece of watermelon.

After burning her body, we see 'ghost Setsuko' playing around the shelter. I cried again.

I feel like I just retold most of the story so let's move on.
After Seita dies, which is at the beginning of the movie, his soul is reunited with the souls of his younger sister. I guess you could say we got a happy ending, but it's still sad if you think about it. The end of the movie shows the two falling asleep on a bench together. However before this, the two now dead sibling just witnessed all of their mistakes in the last few months of their lives. Following their living selves throughout the journey towards their death. How depressing.

And Setsuko is really cute. She didn't deserve to die. Actually neither of them deserved to die.

I think I'm gonna cry again :(
Despite being a tear-jerking war movie, it is still really entertaining to watch. The story is very well planned out and provides you with insight into what kids years and years and years ago might've had to go through during that time.
