Pilot: Part One

LEE
Sucker?

Maxine blinks and snaps out of her trance. She takes the sucker and unwraps it.

MAXINE
How many of those do you have?

Lee shrugs then kneels down and looks under the table, showing lollipops taped everywhere under the desk.

JAIDEN
(inside Lee's head)
She steals them remember?

LEE
(hisses)
Shut up. Not here.

Maxine didn't hear anything and pocket the wrapper of the sucker she just unwrapped.

LEE
(Sits up.)
Ummmmm..... You have my last one.

MAXINE
You can have it back.

LEE
(gets back up)
Naw, it's fine.

MAXINE
Do you guys want me to help you get ready for the mission?

CAPTAIN HAYES
No need.

Captain Hayes has appeared at the door and the three turned to him.

DEX
Wait, what do you mean "no need"?

CAPTAIN HAYES
I mean that there is no need for you two to do something of actual importance.

LEE
Ouch.

CAPTAIN HAYES
(sighs)
Holt and Warsh offered to do the mission, so you two are off the hook.

DEX AND LEE
(high-five)
Yes!

CAPTAIN HAYES
Don't get excited. Something came up and I need you two to do something for me.

DEX
What came up?

Hayes look at Maxine, debates for a moment, then sighs.

CAPTAIN HAYES
The Council is causing trouble.

Dex and Lee look confused.

DEX
Yeah... mate, that is the sort of thing you never told us about. Something about not working here long enough and stuff.

LEE
(quietly to Dex)
Even though we've been here for more than five years.

CAPTAIN HAYES
I heard that. And technically, you only started working here two years ago.

LEE
We've still been here for a while.

CAPTAIN HAYES
(sighs again)
Listen. The Council is a rival agency. They focus more on training assassins, bounty hunters, and mercenaries more that actual agents that help the world. We've been in a very heated... how should I put this. Disagreement.. with them for years, and nothing has changed.

MAXINE
Not entirely. We have formed a truce before sir. Right?

CAPTAIN HAYES
A truce that they broke years ago. We are now constantly fighting with them on missions.

LEE
Wait, were they the ones who-?

CAPTAIN HAYES
Yes, Lee. They were the ones that we assumed took your father.

LEE
(leans back in her chair)
I knew the name sounded familiar.

HAYES
They are also the ones who took Markovetz.

DEX
Wait, what?

CAPTAIN HAYES
Walkins and Bower have encountered a few Council agents, and Agent Woods says that he has detected some Council movement here.

DEX
In the city?

CAPTAIN HAYES
Yes. He's gone out searching for them. I need Fischer and Grant to stay late tonight in case he runs into any trouble.
