I stare at Bill blankly and my mother yells from the other room, "Is everything okay!?"
I hesitate a moment as Bill and I stare at each other. Under my breath I say, "Yeah, it is," as I push past Bill and out of the room. I meet my parents in the other room in front of a plain Christmas tree. Bill follows me and we all begin to decorate as if nothing happened. Everyone is having a good time laughing with each other. I even almost forgot what happened until Bill and I went to hang an ornament on the same branch and our hands touched with a spark of energy. I avoid eye contact and move to a different side of the tree. After a long night we all begin to part to get to bed. Bill and I decide to stay there for the night. I'm left alone in the living room with my mother, sitting on the couch and admiring the newly lit tree. She smiles at me and I furrow my brow concerned, "What?"
"You two are such a cute couple," she rests her head on my shoulder.
I scoff, "We aren't together."
"Well you should be," she states blantantly.
I stand up abruptly, kind of offended, "Mom, he's twenty years older than me."
"He loves you. You deserve a kind man who loves you," She sighs happily.
I get quiet and bite at my fingernails. I peek in the other room to find Bill laughing with my dad. I sigh and slump my shoulders, "I don't know, mom."
She stands and places a hand on my shoulder, "Everything will work out," she kisses the side of my head and leaves for her bedroom. I watch as Bill shakes my dad's hand and my dad leaves for the bedroom as well. I accompany Bill in setting up the pull out couch quietly and awkwardly. When it's finished he crawls onto one side and I stand at the edge, "I can sleep in a chair."
He sits up concerned, "What? No, come lie down." He gestures to the empty spot next to him.
I get into the bed slowly. He wraps an arm around me and pulls me close. He sighs and whispers to me, "Let's just try to be happy. Together." I smile softly and nod my head. It isn't long until I fall asleep by the comfort of being in his arms.
We wake up bright and early so we don't miss our flight to Miami. I made Bill promise he wouldn't cancel and I told him I would be happy to go with him. We both give my parents hugs and part ways. The drive to the airport is relaxing. He frequently reaches over to just hold my hand. It's a different kind of emotion when I feel truly wanted by Bill. We arrive at the airport early and decide to get some food. We haven't sat down for more than a minute and a group of fans start talking to Bill. I keep quiet and admire him as he looks so happy talking to them. Bill fell asleep on the plane and I had to wake him up when we arrived in Miami. We had to hurry out of the airport and make it to the studio that was interviewing him. We barely made it in time but they rushed Bill to makeup and on the set as I watched from backstage content. The interview was very relaxed. They asked a lot of questions about the upcoming season of Barry and what all he was allowed to say. It wasn't until the end of the interview the questions got more personal.
"So Bill," the gorgeous young reporter started, "you've been a bachelor for almost a year now. Is there anyone special in your life?"
I felt my face turn bright red but I tried to set my feelings aside. I know how important he is and I don't expect him to say anything about me.
"As a matter of fact," I hear him start and I look up to see him looking my way, "I'm here with my girlfriend right now."
I feel butterflies in my stomach as the audience applauds and hollers. The world girlfriend sends me into a quick trance. But suddenly I start to feel sick. I forgot about Ben again. Ben and I never made things official but we had pretty much decided to be exclusive these past couple of months. Now here I am with a whole other boyfriend. I felt my stomach churn and I ran out of the backstage exit to get some fresh air. Nobody would know who I am right? Ben wouldn't be able to find out. Everything was going to be okay. Bill came out through the door and walked up to me concerned, "I'm sorry, I just thought we-"
"No, I'm so happy I just feel like a terrible person and I don't know what to do," I blurted out.
He furrowed his brow.
I looked up at him and my nerves immediately relaxed. I smiled, pulled him into my arms, and kissed him softly. He smiled back and his cheeks even flushed a bit. "Everything will be okay," I said.
We walked out to our Uber hand in hand. I elbowed him, "So I hear you've got a girlfriend now, what a shame. I really thought I had a chance," I teased him.
He smirked, "Do you wanna get a hotel here tonight?"
I felt the butterflies in my stomach, "I thought we had a flight back home tonight?"
He stopped me before we could get in the car, "Let's reschedule for tomorrow." I furrowed my brow but I had a feeling I knew what he was talking about. He pulled me in close and whispered in my ear, "I want you." I felt a shiver down my spine and had to bite my lip to keep myself from audibly moaning. He kissed the side of my ear and led me into the car. When we got inside he grabbed my thigh and squeezed it tight. He stared into my eyes but spoke to the driver, "Four Seasons, please."
