I stuff my feet into my creased trainers and hurry out the front door, yelling my goodbyes to my family.
I can't be late today. My presentation is at 9!
My footsteps are hurried as I pace round the block to the school gates.
Kat and Maya (my best friends, my only friends) wave at me from the bench. I free a hand that was clutching my presentation notes to wave back. Shit! I drop my wad of notes on the floor and they escape my reach down the concrete steps that lead to the entrance. What am I going to do now? I don't attempt to get them back. That would be embarrassing, madly dashing around the playground in the violent wind.
Think of something quick. I feel my eyes start to twitch. Oh no. They do this when I'm nervous. I always twitch when I'm nervous. I hate it. People think I'm winking at them.
Ok Wendy. Just tell Sir you can't do your presentation.
I find Mr McKay at his desk, typing away at his keyboard.
"Sir, my presentation notes just f-flew away at the e-entrance. I can't do it. I don't remember a-anything!!" I stutter, anxiety filling my throat.
"Wendy, I know you're nervous but you can't be making up excuses. Even if they did magically disappear you must remember something, you've had this project for 4 weeks." Mr McKay replies sternly.
Fuck.
"It was the wind... I guess I can remember s-s-something."
Why can't I get through a sentence without stuttering?
