Lauren
The snow fell down outside of the window as I drove down the icy road. The stop light ahead quickly turned from green to red. I slammed my foot into the brake pedal but the car slid to the side as the oncoming car attempted to stop as well. Everything turned to slow motion, the snow falling, the car turning, my head swinging from side to side, the screaming, all of it. I could barely see anything but the world spinning. The car door caved in and I let out a scream as something hit my rib. I had no idea what was going on.
I wake up, the fluorescent lights blinding me. My head, pounding. There were bandages wrapped around my head and up and down my whole body, a cast around my right leg. There were needles and tubes poking out of my arms and some stitches near my belly button. I pushed myself up so I was sitting up, not knowing what happened. A nurse walked in, looking at her clipboard. When she saw me, she jumped backwards and made a small noise.
"Ma'am?" my voice was raspy, "Where am I?"
"Um, Hackettstown Medical Center," she was flipping through her pages, "Please excuse me for a moment."
She ran out of the door and came back with a worried looking doctor. He sat down next to the bed and started to look at the screens next to me.
"Hey, I'm Dr. Peterson, I need to ask you some questions," he put his hand out and the nurse handed him a pen and the clipboard.
"O-okay," I stuttered.
"Okay, do you know your name?" He clicked the pen.
"Lauren Turner, Lauren Ava Turner," I looked at him.
"Thank you. Lauren, what's your moms name?"
"Christine Turner."
"Your dad?"
"Nicholas Turner."
"What school do you go to?"
"West Morris Central High School."
"When's your birthday?"
"September 29, 2003."
"How old would that make you?"
"16?"
"Thank you. Okay now, do you know why you're here?"
I shook my head. Dr. Peterson wrote everything down then left the room. I stared straight ahead when memories came rushing into my brain. The car. The snow. I struggled to get up as the nurse walked in with my parents. They were holding hands, crying. I suddenly stopped.
"Mom, Dad?"
They ran over to me and embraced me in a big hug.
"Where am I?" I looked around.
"Baby you need to lay down. Get better so you can come home."
"What happened?" the nurse put me in the bed and took the needles and tubes out of my arm. She unwrapped my head to inspect it, and threw everything away.
"Don't worry baby, do you not remember?"
I shook my head, getting worried.
"The car accident? It was really bad. You've been in a coma for a about a month," she wiped a tear.
walked out and cane back with discharge papers.
My parents came to sign and helped me out. I changed into sweatpants and a hoodie as the nurse wheeled me out to our car. My parents were ecstatic, but I couldn't bring myself to say a word.
