Glass Half Empty

You sat perched on his lap, a spot you weren't invited to often. You didn't know his name, they always referred to him as The Dragon.

There was no intimidating meaning behind it initially, he had carried the name since he was young, rather innocent beginning considering of what became of it.
His name sullied the lips of many, but it didn't discourage you from taking your place upon his thigh. He treated everyone badly, even you, and still, you sat poised and proud wherever he ordered.
You knew better than to take advantage of the position he's given you tonight, you sat quietly.

Slightly exposed to those opposite you, they knew better than to stare for too long. They had names for themselves, but they were mere nobodies to him, and so, they were nobodies to you.

But even in front of nobodies you were gratified that he would flaunt you tonight of all nights.

It was your birthday, not that he ever remembered but you secretly told yourself that it was why he had picked you this evening. Had it been someone else, you would have convinced yourself that he hadn't chose you because it was your birthday and instead, would prefer you rested.

"You'll behave for me tonight, right Angel?"

It was almost demeaning how quick you responded with an enthusiastic nod when he requested your company, hands held tight at your sides.

There you sat, clad in his favorite small dress for you and heels to match, giggling at words you weren't even taking in and politely pouring shots to offer those he chose to entertain. You were a year older but the night didn't belong to you, instead you belonged to him for the night.

You made sure to pay him the extra attention you knew he craved while not getting too carried away, lightly running your fingers over his shirt that he paid an excessive amount for, shy pecks to his cheek every time he landed a joke and your gaze never left him unless you were pouring drinks. You were careful. Well aware that you shouldn't speak unless spoken to, no reaction came from you when one of the guests decided to get brave.

"Do you dance, Darling?"

You felt him stiffen underneath you, hot breath hitting your neck.

"Who do you think you're talking to?"

Dangerous yet composed, you felt the mood shift in seconds, the air became restricted with tension and nobody dared move.

"I- I was only kidding."

Hands up in useless defense, he knew he was done.

"You think you run shit because I gave you a seat at the big kids table? But I'll amuse you, yes, I do dance. Darling"

He sat back slightly, his hand laid gently on your hip and you reeled in the rarity of a gentle touch that would always reduce you into a mess just for him. But you upheld the farce to keep face.

"C'mon Jiyong, You know I didn't-"

You weren't offended when he pushed you off his lap, enough force to send a message for you to move but not enough to send you flying like he could have. He stood, straightening his shirt by pulling the front tails of it taught.

"I know you didn't, what?"

There was no use in answering, but there was even less use in keeping silent. He always loved to make an example of people who got too cocky, even if it meant making a scene in front of hundreds to get his point across, and still, nobody moved.

His hand moved to the back of his pants and you knew to block your ears, you've grown accustomed to seeing him take lives, after all, he took yours without asking. The only exception was, he kept you breathing.

Gunshots didn't ring your ears like you thought, you suspected a silencer. Either way, it was another name on a never-ending list but still as he sat back down, and you took your position back on his lap, unphased.

Speaking out of turn wasn't the reason the man died tonight. You were well aware that having your head blown off for a passing comment was overkill, even for him, he was just waiting for the guy to slip in front of him, any small reason to eliminate an unsuspecting fuck up.

Breathe. You told yourself to do so every time his unforgiving actions unraveled in front of you, which was so often the word lost all meaning.

As the night commenced, still nobody bothered to clean up the mess that had been made. Everybody continued as if there wasn't a dead body sprawled out in the middle of the V.I.P section, including yourself.

"Tired, baby?"

You hadn't realized that you had blatantly been staring at nothing, wondering how you had come to a point where not even death caused your stomach to wrench like it used to when he would kill girl after girl in front of you.
You weren't sure if he liked you enough to let you admit that you were tired so you shook your head silently, smiling content.

He gave you a look that didn't quite fit him, unconvinced and muted. None the less he ran his hand up your thigh and continued the night.
